John was born before 3 November 1712 at St Minver, Cornwall, England. The stated age on the MI for John Blake is 69 years. The Ross marriage index lists him as John Blake of St. Minver. The only record of baptism of a John Blake fitting these parameters was the son of Robert Blake and Anne. Evidence of parentage is given in the will of Robert Blake made in 1742 in which Robert refers to his son John but also to his daughter Elizabeth Mably. John Blake was to appoint his kinsman John Mably as one of the Executors and Trustees of his last will. John Mably was husband to Elizabeth Blake, second daughter of Robert Blake and Anne Westcott and therefor a brother in law..1 He married Elizabeth Trevethan on 16 July 1733 at St Petroc, Padstow, Cornwall, England. On the "tree" drawn by William Martin Richards, Elizabeth was acknowledged as the first wife of John Blake and the sole heiress of Trevone in Padstow. Although a record of a marriage settlement has not been found, the sale of properties following John's death indicate that he had acquired several properties which would have been part of Elizabeth's inheritance. Treniow Stiles, the Little Field in Treniow, New Park in Trenean and Great Field on Trevone had belonged to her father, Robert Trevethan, yeoman.2
John signed a marriage settlement with Joan Martin circa 14 September 1743 at Padstow, Cornwall, England. As a term of this settlement, John had reserved the right to extract 300 pounds to his own use. A note on the Blake tree states that Joan Martin was co-inheritor to Tregerren..
John Blake was recorded as an Overseer of the Poor for the parish of Padstow in 1751, 1754, 1764, 1767 and 1770, continuing until his death; Overseer of the Poor and attended to disbursements.3
He purchased land from a John Jelbert of Padstow gent on 7 January 1754 at Padstow, Cornwall, England. The deed was a lease and release for "part of a tenement lately an orchard now a slate helling stone quarry in Padstow bounded on the south with Fentonlinne Street.".4
In 1766 John was appointed by H Prideaux Esq., as the reeve for the manor of Padstow Penkavil. Part of his responsibility included keeping accounts and collecting rents. A typical account listing yearly rents totalling 26 pounds 12 shillings and 4 pence was submitted by John on 30 December 1771..5 On 25 October 1766 he was also listed in the Prideaux family papers as a free tenant residing in the Manor of Padstow Penkevil, at in the Manor of Padstow Penkevil, Padstow, Cornwall, England.6
In 1773 John was appointed as a Churchwarden of the Parish church of St Petroc in Padstow.2
He made a will on 25 February 1776 at Padstow, Cornwall, England. He bequeathed his wife Joan Blake one guinea to buy a Mourning ring with the express wish that she would wear it for his sake. He gave the responsibility of managing or disposing of his estates to his friend and kinsman John Mably Junr of St. Minver, John Martin of Padstow and his wife Joan Blake. When debts were settled, the remainder was to be divided equally between his four daughters. He also directed that the asset of 300 pounds set aside in his marriage settlement, should be realised and divided between his daughters. Lastly he arranged for his wife Joan Blake to remain in the house where he was then residing, together with the use of the Horsmill and the Horsmill meadow, so long as she continued to be his widow, but no longer.7.8 He was paid by the Overseers of the Highways for 156 foot and half of flooring stones for the Church Lane at one penny half penny per foot - total 19 shillings and 6 pence. Also 2 days work making conduit nigh Place Gate - 2 shillings. in 1779.9
A slate tablet found in the cellar of the Memorial Hall in Riverside Padstow during rebuilding, records a contract entered into in 1779 by John Blake. At his own expense, he engaged Robert Link mason to rebuild a house of which he was the Inheritor and Proprietor of the Fee Simple. This slate belongs to the Malcolm McCarthy collection but is on loan to the Padstow Town Museum. The actual building to which this slate refers is probably no longer standing, but it may have been the earlier building on the same site.10
John died on 21 October 1781 at Padstow, Cornwall, England.2
John's will was probated on 6 November 1782 at Padstow, Cornwall, England. The will and Codicil of one John Blake Yeoman lately deceased and proved in Common Sworn before the Revd William Sandys (?) master of Arts, Surrogate & so forth, administration of all & singular the Goods & so forth of the said Deceased & of all things howsoever concerning his said will was granted to John Mably gent & Joan Blake widow the two surviving Execrs in Trust named in the said will being first in (and) forms of Law Sworn /? & so forth
