FATAL CART ACCIDENT
A STOREKEEPER KILLED
There was a tragic mishap about dusk last night in President-street, at the Half-Way, when Samuel Thomas Withell, sixty-three, storekeeper, of Boulder-road, died after a fall from his cart.
It seems that a lurch of the vehicle in a rut just past where Oberthur-street crosses President-street, threw Withell from his seat on some furniture he had roped on to his spring dray. The articles, including a dresser, sideboard, copper and various sundries purchased during the day in the sale at Mr. F. Langfear's house in Melba-street, by the wife of Mr. Fred. Withell, who holds the licence of the Broken Hill Hotel, were being taken by the old man to the latter's house at the junction.
Thomas Trewenack, a miner on the Great Boulder Proprietary mine, living in President-street, a few yards from the scene of the accident, says he saw the deceased go by about 7 o'clock, observing that he was sitting perched rather high on the top of some furniture. The vehicle had passed out of sight when the sound of a crash came to Mr. Trewenack ears, and a few seconds later a woman calling for help. Running over he found Mrs. Grace S. Cook standing near the cart, which had come to a standstill with Withell lying on his left side on the ground, his legs in front of the wheel. He drew him gently out, others came running up, one was sent for some spirits, water was obtained to bathe his head, on which a mark showed where he had apparently struck the ground, but Mr. Trewenack, his hand on the old man's chest, felt his heart give a big jump and then seem to stop. Handing him over to the others around he went to the public telephone on Boulder-road and summoned the police.
Mrs. Cook, who lives with her husband at the corner of Oberthur and President streets, not more than twenty yards from the scene of the accident, says she had not long given tea to two of her sons who are in the expeditionary forces, one having returned from the front wounded, and she and Mr. Cook were sitting on the front verandah. They could hear a cart approaching. Then suddenly there was a crash followed by a groan. Bidding her husband, who is an invalid, to remain behind, Mrs. Cook ran out and found the old man lying on the ground, the horse standing quietly. Apparently, she thinks, he was taking a short cut behind a street lamp on the corner to get to the beaten track, and the cart jolted in one of the ruts of which there are a number thereabouts, causing the furniture to crash together, and jerking the old man out. She called for help, and when it came fetched water to bath the injured man. She also observed an abrasion just over his forehead.
Dr. Mathews, who was on the scene quickly, pronounced life extinct, and Corporal Buttle had the body removed to the morgue, where a post mortem examination will be held this morning.
A pathetic feature about the tragedy is that Sydney Withell, son of the deceased, having enlisted some time ago in the expeditionary forces, is expected up from camp on Sunday morning to say good-bye to his parents.
It is said by the eldest son, Mr. Fred Withell, that there were no signs of ill-health about his father lately. He was out yesterday delivering goods on the trans-Australian railway, and when he came to take the goods down to his daughter-in-law's house, was said to be in good spirits.
The deceased resided for seventeen years on the goldfields.

The Kalgoorie Miner, Monday 11 October 1915
(Western Australia)

The Late Mr. S. T. Withell.—An inquest was opened on Saturday on the remains of the late Samuel Thomas Withell, who died on Friday night after a fall from his cart in President-street. It is learnt that he was a native of Cornwall (Eng.) and had retired from the British navy over thirty years ago to live on the Gippsland Lakes as manager of the residence of Judge Box, of Victoria, and supervisor of his Honour’s yachts. There he married and nineteen years ago came to live with his family in Boulder-road. On the Ivanhoe mine he was carpenter for about nine years, afterwards indulging in prospecting, and more latterly taking up business in a small general store. He could tell many stories of his sea life; there were few of the world’s harbours he was not acquainted with, and when the present war broke out his longing to witness a sea battle under modern conditions was disappointed when on application for service again, he was rejected on account of his age. One of his brothers, Mr. Robert Withell, is at present a Superintendent Inspector of Transports in the Old Country. Another, having served his time as engineer in the Royal Navy, is now attached to the merchant service. There are three sons, Norman, who has charge of a tug-boat at Fremantle, belonging to McIlwraith, McEacharn and Co., and Fred. and Sidney, the latter now in the expeditionary forces. The inquest into the circumstances of his death will be resumed on the 14th before Mr. E. R. Brown, J.P., acting Coroner, and a jury comprising Messrs. G. W. Allan, W. Bourne, and A. T. Hornsey.
