Mary was born in December 1837 at St Columb district, Cornwall, England.1,2 Mary died at age 40 in September 1878. A census listed Mary as head of household on 3 April 1881 on Mitcham Common at Surrey, England. Her occupation was. Mary Mitchell, born 1838 in Cornwall, was visiting a Jonas Luscome in a tent on Mitcham Common, Surrey!! She was shown as a widow, occupation hawker, and he was also widowed, occupation general dealer.

Other female members of the family from Swansea also did not fare very well eg Roger's wife Eliza and Elizabeth mn Cowling were both in the workhouse. It would seem that when a women was left a widow she got little or no help. In one of the letters we had from Glad Halls daughter of Annie Withell, she wondered why the mother Eliza was placed in a workhouse when she had all those daughters.
Work was very scarce for shipwrights and some had moved on to other shipyards.

The family lived at 9 William St from where Thomas and his two brothers attended school. In March Qr. 1861 he married Susan Burgen .      TO BE UPDATED

Uriah the third son of Thomas Withell and Malinda Ann Butson, was born at Lanteglos in the March Qr. 1845. He moved to Swansea with his parents and would have gone to school there. On 16 June 1867 Uriah married Martha Hopkins the daughter of a house painter, Thomas Hopkins in the Mount Pleasant Baptist Chapel at St Thomas, Swansea. The birth and death of a son Thomas Hopkins Withell was registered at Swansea in June quarter 1870.
Unfortunately some filmed sections of the 1871 census of Swansea are unreadable and it has not been possible to locate Uriah and Martha.

Martha died in the September quarter of 1872 and Uriah did not remain a widower for very long. On 25 November 1873 he married Elizabeth Waterman Dyment in St Peters Chapel of Ease, Swansea. Their life together was shortlived because Elizabeth Waterman W died on 8 January 1875 and was buried in the Danygraig Cemetery, Port Tennant Swansea on 11 January. It would seem that Elizabeth may have died in chidbirth because a William Henry Withell age 9 weeks was buried in the same grave just two months later. Uriah was a widower for the second time. Within a couple of years he set up family with Belinda G (perhaps Cossentine?) and they moved to the London area, right away from his parents and siblings. A marriage has not been found in the index but they were not very settled and frequently changed their place of residence. Their son Henry Cossentine Withell was born in 1878 in Camberwell, but his whereabouts in 1881 Census has yet to be located. A daughter Ida Cossentine Withell was reg.Dec Qr 1879 in Mile End London and another son Thomas was born in the Dec Qr 1880 at Poplar. In 1881 Uriah and Belinda were living at 1 Quickett St., Bromley. Uriah was now 38 and Belinda was 41. Ida Cossentine age 1 and Thomas age 4 months were the only children with them. Melinda's brother John Cossentine age 36 who was a widower was a lodger with the family.

The family were not living at 1 Quickett St Bromley in 1891. Suggest search West Ham fiche for 1891 census

Uriah appears to have made another alliance although no marraige record has been found. On ? Selena Jane Withell widow of Uriah Withell died at
??? .Uriah died on 2nd May 1900 at West Ham London and was buried in the Woodgate cemetery.
Uriah was born in March 1843 at Lanteglos, Cornwall, England.1 Uriah was employed at as a House carpenter at Swansea, Glamorganshire, Wales, on 7 April 1861.2 He married Martha Hopkins on 16 June 1867 at Swansea, Glamorganshire, Wales. Uriah was employed as a house carpenter and at the time of marriage was living in Camp House Street, St Thomas,Swansea. Martha Hopkins had been living in Maliphant Street, SaintThomas, Swansea..3

He married Elizabeth Waterman Dyment on 25 November 1873 by Banns in St Peters Chapel of Ease at Swansea, Glamorganshire, Wales. Uriah Withell was noted as a widower age 30, son of Thomas Withell shipwright and living at Hafod Swansea. Elizabeth Waterman Dyment had been living in High St Swansea and was a daughter of Isaac Dyment - merchant
The witnesse were William Dyment and Emily Jane Jones..3 He married Melinda Grace Cossentine on 8 July 1876 at All Saint's Parish Church at Battlebridge, Middlesex, England. The witnesses were John Cossentine, brother of the bride and Sarah Schofield. Spelling was Whithell..4 He resided 1 Quickett Street, at Bromley London, Middlesex, England, on 3 April 1881.5 A census listed Uriah as head of household on 3 April 1881 1 Quickett St. London at London, England. His occupation was House Carpenter.6 He emigrated on 4 March 1890 from London, England; The official printout year is 1891 but the shipping register appears to have been amended to 1890. Uriah was a miner aged 46. He is alleged to have married Selena Jane (?).7 Uriah died at age 57 on 2 May 1900 at West Ham, London, England.8 He was buried after 2 May 1900 at London, England.9

Nicholas was born Mar Qr. 1845 at Fowey, Cornwall, England. His birth was registered at Fowey in the March Qr. 1845 and he was the fourth son of Thomas Withell shipwright, and Melinda Butson..1 Nicholas went to school in Swansea and was to follow his father's trade as a shipwright. He was discharged from on 18 August 1867 at Swansea, Glamorganshire, Wales.2

There must have been continued communication between the Withells and the families in Polruan because Nicholas apparently returned to visit his mother's family in Polruan and met Emily Cossentine who was to become his bride. The village of Polruan is on the north side of Fowey harbour and is part of the parish of Lanteglos. It was in the Lanteglos parish church on 21 June 1869 that Nicholas age 24 married Emily age 19. Both their mothers were Butsons, either sisters or cousins. The witnesses at the marriage were Emily's older sister Malinda Grace and Henry Harvey, a retired Master Mariner, who was an uncle by marriage, probably of both bride and groom. Following their marriage, Nicholas and Emily returned to Swansea where their first seven children were born.3

The 1881 Census records Nicholas age 36 and Emily age 31 living with five children at 38 Inkerman St Swansea. He was a carpenter. Thomas Henry Withell, eldest brother of Nicholas was living next door.4

About 1886 Nicholas and Emily moved to Portsmouth where Albert and Lilian were born. The relocation was probably precipitated by the falling off of work in Swansea whereas the dockyards at Portsmouth were flourishing.

Nicholas died of a kidney complaint in 1911. in June 1911 at Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. His widow Emily lived for another 18 years, from at least 1920 in the home of her second youngest daughter Edith and husband Harry Waldron. She died on 13 May 1929 at 52 Queen's Road, Buckland, Portsmouth.5
