FatherRobert Withell b. 27 May 1781, d. 6 Jan 1870
MotherBlanche Davies b. 12 Jun 1785, d. Sep 1864
Martin was baptised on 11 November 1821 at the Episcopal Chapel Torpoint. His father's occupation was given as a shipwright in HM Dockyard. In 1841 he was living at Macey St Torpoint with his parents and three siblings.

He was probably aged 27 when he married Elizabeth Jane Hill in the December quarter 1848 at St Germans. He was employed as a carpenter in the Royal Navy and when the census was taken on 30 March 1851, he was away at sea. His wife Elizabeth, infant daughter Elizabeth J. and his 16 year old unmarried sister-in- law Sarah B Hill were living at 24 Harvey St. Torpoint.
The family must have moved briefly to Portsea because the birth of John Allan was registered there in 1855

On the night of 7 April 1861, Martin was again away at sea, this time on the ship "Oak". Elizabeth and her sons James R, John A, and Martin and daughter Agnes B were living in Macey St Torpoint. The eldest daughter Elizabeth who would have been 11 was not listed with her mother.

A son Arthur who was born in 1864 lived only a short time. Another son also named Arthur Frederick was born before Martin's own death .
Martin Withell late of 6 Melbourne St Plymouth died 1 March 1871 at Stonehouse. His will was proved by his widow and sole executrix Elizabeth Jane Withell. Effects were under 450 pounds.

By 3 April 1881 Elizabeth and her two youngest children, Agnes 21 and Frederick 12 were the only family living at 6 Melbourne Street Plymouth. The older boys were apparently at sea.

Elizabeth Jane died on 27 May 1890 at Desborough Road Plymouth. She would have been 62 years old and appears to have been living with her son John Allan Withell, one of her executors. Martin was born before 11 November 1821 at Torpoint, Cornwall, England. He married Elizabeth Jane Hill in December 1848 at St Germans district, Cornwall, England. GRO index confirms marriage for bride and groom..1 A census listed Martin on 7 April 1861 on the ship Amphion at sea. Immediately after her death the residuary real and personal estate was to be divided equally between his six children with suitable provision made for their issue should any of the children predecease him. A special clause directed that shares for any female child of his should be totally independant of intermeddling by a husband. Power was given to the executors to sell or convert real and personal estate into money as they in their discretion saw fit. The debt owing to Israel by his son Charles Green was not to be called up during the lifetime of his wife, but interest at the rate of four per centum per annum was to be paid to her quarterly. If he was not able to repay immediately following his mother's death, allowance was made for him to repay by ten equal annual instalments with interest on outstanding balance as above, He also made provision for possible investment of the monies in purchase or mortgage of real estate or in stocks legally allowable for trust funds.4 Israel died on 11 February 1890 at Carbeel, Plymouth, Devon, England.1 Israel's will was probated on 26 March 1890 at Bodmin, Cornwall, England. 1890

MotherAnn Elizabeth Nicholls b. s 1823, d. 13 Jan 1899
Frederick Nicholls Withell was born at Torpoint on 2 March 1862. In both the 1871 census and the 1881 census, he is shown as living with his parents at Loch Lomond Cottage, Carbeel Road Torpoint. When he was 19 he was employed as a tailor in wool.

In March qr 1980 when he would have been 28 years old, he married Beatrice Phillips in Plymouth.Their first son Frederick Green Withell was born on 22 July 1891 at "Treavalley" St Germans, Cornwall. It may be that Frederick sen. had difficulty finding work, because the family did not stay in one place for very long, as indicated by the listing of the children's birthplace found in the family bible. George Norman was born in Kensington Pk Rd London whereas Blanche Phillips and Fanny Catherine were born at Notting Hill. By the end of 1900 they had moved again to Winnifred Road, Manor Park for the arrival of Reginald Pole Carew Withell. A much bigger dislocation saw the family move to Renfrewshire Scotland where the last three children were born.

The last daughter, Beatrice Hughendon Withell lived for only one day and at some time after this, Beatrice and Frederick went their separate ways. Frederick went to live in Bridgewater in Somerset whilst Beatrice and the children took up residence in a tiny hamlet in Devon called Huckworthy Bridge. Beatrice was always spoken of in the family as "The Mother". Gradually the young ones left home to take up their various callings. Both Frederick and Beatrice died in 1953.

At present nothing has been found about Frederick Green the eldest son. It seems possible that he was separated from the rest of the family because Max did not list him as an uncle.

George, the next son served in a Mounted regiment either in the 14/18 War or the Boer War. Eventually he married and settled in Wycombe in Buckinghamshire and between Oxford and London. He had three sons John, Len and Reg and two daughters,Joan and Beryl. John now lives in New Zealand, whilst the others stayed in England.

John Charles and Reginald joined the British Royal Navy as boy seamen. They served until they retired, some years after the 1939-45 War. Reginald married late in life and had no children.

When John Charles was stationed in Plymouth as a serviceman in the Peacetime Navy he met "??? who was also stationed there. They were married in Aucland, New Zealand but their only son Maxwell John was born in Devonport on 21 August 1933. As a member of the peacetime Navy, John Charles was able to take his wife and son with him, and young Max had been to New Zealand twice before the outbreak of war. In 1949 John Charles remained in Plymouth but Max and his mother returned to New Zealand. He and wife Coral spent many years in Woolongong Australia but returned to New Zealand in 1989 and are now living in Nelson. John Charles Withell died on the 2 April 1894.

Blanche stayed in Plymouth, and went into catering. She eventually became manageress of a restaurant, one of a chain owned by a company called "Goodbody's. Late in life she married an ex Chief of Police from Devonshire, Charles Osbourne. There were no children.
Blanche died at the Dewi-Sant Residential Home in Plymouth on 10 November 1991.

Kitty married Arthur Brown, a newspaper editor, and lived in Bournemouth where their son David Brown began an academic career. He became Professor of Archaelogy at Dublin University, and continues to live there. He and his wife had six children.

Nan or EP as she was also called, went into nursing, rising to become a Matron. She was living in Plymouth with her mother during the Second World War when their house was bombed. She also worked for some time in a hospital in either Redruth or St Austell. Nan apparently knew that the Withell family had originally come from Cornwall and at that time was probably the only Withell recorded in the county. Hence her comment that she was the "last Withell in Cornwall'. Edith did not marry and died at the Dewi- Sant Residential home.1

Frederick was born on 1 March 1862 at Torpoint, Cornwall, England. Family Bible has year 1863
GRO index has year 1862. Vol 5c / 45 St Germans district.2,3 He was employed as a tailor and draper in woollen.4 He married Beatrice Eleanor Phillips on 10 March 1890 at Plymouth Charles, Plymouth, Devon, England.5,6 Frederick Nicholls Withell appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at St Germans, Cornwall, England; Frederick and Beatrice were living at Rosedale in the parish of Hessenford. Frederick was a market gardener and poulterer.7 Frederick died at age 91 in April 1953.
