He was probably aged 27 when he married Elizabeth Jane Hill in the December quarter 1848 at St Germans. Frederick Nicholls Withell was born at Torpoint on 2 March 1862. In both the 1871 census and the 1881 census, he is shown as living with his parents at Loch Lomond Cottage, Carbeel Road Torpoint. When he was 19 he was employed as a tailor in wool.
In March qr 1980 when he would have been 28 years old, he married Beatrice Phillips in Plymouth.Their first son Frederick Green Withell was born on 22 July 1891 at "Treavalley" St Germans, Cornwall. It may be that Frederick sen. had difficulty finding work, because the family did not stay in one place for very long, as indicated by the listing of the children's birthplace found in the family bible. George Norman was born in Kensington Pk Rd London whereas Blanche Phillips and Fanny Catherine were born at Notting Hill. By the end of 1900 they had moved again to Winnifred Road, Manor Park for the arrival of Reginald Pole Carew Withell. A much bigger dislocation saw the family move to Renfrewshire Scotland where the last three children were born.
The last daughter, Beatrice Hughendon Withell lived for only one day and at some time after this, Beatrice and Frederick went their separate ways. Frederick went to live in Bridgewater in Somerset whilst Beatrice and the children took up residence in a tiny hamlet in Devon called Huckworthy Bridge. Beatrice was always spoken of in the family as "The Mother". Gradually the young ones left home to take up their various callings. Both Frederick and Beatrice died in 1953.
At present nothing has been found about Frederick Green the eldest son. It seems possible that he was separated from the rest of the family because Max did not list him as an uncle.
George, the next son served in a Mounted regiment either in the 14/18 War or the Boer War. Eventually he married and settled in Wycombe in Buckinghamshire and between Oxford and London. He had three sons John, Len and Reg and two daughters,Joan and Beryl. John now lives in New Zealand, whilst the others stayed in England.
John Charles and Reginald joined the British Royal Navy as boy seamen. They served until they retired, some years after the 1939-45 War. Reginald married late in life and had no children.
When John Charles was stationed in Plymouth as a serviceman in the Peacetime Navy he met "??? who was also stationed there. They were married in Aucland, New Zealand but their only son Maxwell John was born in Devonport on 21 August 1933. As a member of the peacetime Navy, John Charles was able to take his wife and son with him, and young Max had been to New Zealand twice before the outbreak of war. In 1949 John Charles remained in Plymouth but Max and his mother returned to New Zealand. He and wife Coral spent many years in Woolongong Australia but returned to New Zealand in 1989 and are now living in Nelson. John Charles Withell died on the 2 April 1894.
Blanche stayed in Plymouth, and went into catering. She eventually became manageress of a restaurant, one of a chain owned by a company called "Goodbody's. Late in life she married an ex Chief of Police from Devonshire, Charles Osbourne. There were no children.
Blanche died at the Dewi-Sant Residential Home in Plymouth on 10 November 1991.
Kitty married Arthur Brown, a newspaper editor, and lived in Bournemouth where their son David Brown began an academic career. He became Professor of Archaelogy at Dublin University, and continues to live there. He and his wife had six children.
Nan or EP as she was also called, went into nursing, rising to become a Matron. She was living in Plymouth with her mother during the Second World War when their house was bombed. She also worked for some time in a hospital in either Redruth or St Austell. Nan apparently knew that the Withell family had originally come from Cornwall and at that time was probably the only Withell recorded in the county. Hence her comment that she was the "last Withell in Cornwall'. Edith did not marry and died at the Dewi- Sant Residential home.1
