This birthplace is confirmed by the information given in the 1851 census. It is of note that if John and Ann were the correct parents, Richard was to follow the traditional pattern by naming his first son John after his own father.1,2 Richard Davies was The Australian family believed that Richard had served in the Royal Navy. This could have dated from about 1805. Newspaper reports of the occasion in 1901 when his daughter Mary Withell mn Davies, made a presentation to the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York at the end of the Royal visit to Ballarat, allege that her father had served in Trafalgar (1805) and Waterloo. One reporter included the Crimean war but this would have been too late. It was obviously something the family were very proud of as indicated in photos held by Sue Thompson showing Mary Thompson (mn Withell) sitting with her children dressed as sailors of the Royal Navy wearing caps with the names of various Naval ships - HMS Dart and HMS Nautilus. in 1804.
Sometime before 21 May 1823 Richard had moved into the township of Talgarth where he was employed as a.
Richard met Jane Lloyd from Glasbury and folllowing the calling of banns, they were married on 21 May 1823 at St David's parish church in Talgarth by the curate John Jones. Jane would have been 18 years of age. The witnesses were Job Thomas and Elizabeth Roberts. At that time, marriages were required by law to be celebrated in the established church regardless of religious allegiance.3
Talgarth parish church had a strong connection with the Methodist Revival following the conversion of Howell Harris in 1735 at a Communion Service held in the church. Harris continued his allegiance to the Established church but he also founded a community called "The Family" at Trefeca. This community was occupied in agriculture and rural industries and its presence would have had a strong influence in the parish. As in other parts of Wales, those who had been converted were encouraged to break away from the set rituals of the established church and in fact three nonconformist chapels were established in Talgarth. The Tredustan Independent chapel was begun as early as 1700, and in 1794 the Welsh Calvinists also built a Chapel in Talgarth as part of a wider circuit of surrounding parishes in order to be free to observe their own practises of worship. From 1810 to 1837 this circuit was in the custody of William Watkins with a local curate at Talgarth. Bethania Independent Church was opened by the third nonconformist group in 1804.
It is not certain as to when Richard and his family left Talgarth, but by 1835 when their daughter Anne was born, they were living in Dowlais having become part of the mass migration from the rural districts to the industrial areas of South Wales.
The census taken on 30 March 1851 listed Richard as head of household living in Merthyr Tydvil, Wales. His birthplace was Treffeca and he was a 60 years old Cordwainer. The household consisted of his wife Jane 46, daughter Sarah with her husband Thomas Evans, Mary aged 22 and John aged 10. The family had a boarder- Irish born John O'Connor. They were living in New South Wales Street, Dowlais , a village in the county borough of Merthyr Tydvil.. He died before 1861 at Merthyr Tydvil, Wales; His death is presumed from the information given in the 1861 census that Jane was a widow.4

The family moved sometime before the birth of their son John in about 1840 and also possibly also before the birth of their third daughter Ann in 1835 at Dowlais, Wales. She appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Merthyr Tydvil, Wales, Jane, widow (age stated as 57) and her son John 21, were living at 9 Victoria Street Dowlais.3
A Jane Lloyd was buried on 25 Jun 1883 at the parish church of St John the Baptist in Dowlais, Wales. Her age was given as 73. If I have copied this correctly, this can't be the correct Jane who would have been 83. Unfortunately the information given on a UK death certificate may not give any further help.
