It was about this time that Arthur began a relationship with Annie Ross. Doubtful if they actually married. Her married name was Whittaker. She was listed as a resident in the census report at Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, England, on 3 April 1881.² She emigrated with Arthur Henry Whittaker on 30 July 1887 at London, England; The assisted immigration schemes sponsored by the Australian Government had finished so it would have been necessary for Arthur and Annie to pay their own fares. They found a passage available on the "Hesperus" which was registered as leaving from the Port of London and was provisioned for an expected voyage of 140 days. she married Arthur Henry Whittaker say 1888. They were evidently not married when they left England and I have found no record of a marriage in Victoria.. Annie died on 23 August 1889 at 215 Pelham Street, Carlton, Victoria, Australia, at age 36. The informant was Arthur Whitaker. He claimed that he was her husband and that they had married in England when she was 20 years old. There had been three children, Lily, Frederick and Frank, none of whom had lived. There is a note on the death certificate regarding the spelling on the surname " to be read as Whitaker not Whittaker". He registered her death as his wife..⁴ Her body was interred on 25 August 1889 at Carlton, Victoria, Australia, at Melbourne General.⁵
