Jean, James and Maria, James McDowall Excise man's children, resided with James, at Broughty Ferry, Scotland, on 26 March 1811.Maria would have been only 2 months old when her father was transferred to Broughty Ferry.4

The children moved with their father on 26 June 1819 to Rowe.Maria was 7.5 Maria was left an orphan by James McDowall Excise man's death on 15 December 1821.6,7

She married Archibald McEachern at Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland, on 4 November 1837. Both bride and groom had been living in Gorbals in Govan which is a parish of Glasgow on the south side of the river Clyde. Archibald's surname was written as McGechen..8 As of 4 November 1837,her married name was McEachern.9

When the New Zealand Company offered assisted passages for emigrants to New Zealand, Maria with her husband Archibald McEachern and two children decided to emigrate. They left from Cumry on the Clyde on 4 July 1842 in the barque New Zealand, a ship of 455 tons, commanded by Captain C H Worth. There were no true cabin passengers except the surgeon but the McCahen family were listed as emmigrants. Archibald was a joiner aged 25 and Maria's age was given as 27. In fact she woud have been 31. The surname McEachern was often badly spelled and this listing gave the spelling as McCachen.

Describe conditions on the voyage - first settlers.10 Maria was the spouse of Archibald McEachern when he immigrated on 4 November 1842.11,10

Maria immigrated again on 29 March 1854 sailing on the Rolla bound for Melbourne. She was accompanied by five of her own children and the family of her brother. The two daughters who were born in Scotland were not included, and apparently remained in New Zealand.12 She and Archibald McEachern ireturned in December 1862 to Otago, New Zealand. Perhaps they had not had success in the Victorian gold rush and life in Melbourne had not come up to expectations. However there would have been a strong family incentive to return to New Zealand because they had left a daughter behind in New Zealand and their son John had already gone back. With their two remaining sons, Hugh and Archibald, they left for Otago on the Dunedin in December 1862. Once again they made false declarations about their age. Maria claimed to be 33 years old when she was actually 51 and Archibald's age was given as 40 when he was actually 45.They had lived in Victoria for 9 years.13

In the 1850's with further children, they had gone to the Victorian goldfields, returning to NZ in the early 1860's initially to Dunedin, then back to Nelson. By then their older children were growing up, going their own ways, and becoming spread about geographically.

"Mr John McEachern, photographer, Winton, returned to Dunedin with his uncle in September, 1861, from Melbourne by the American ship Annie Kimball with about 450 others. Amongst these was Mr H. Coverlid, who opened a shaving salon the day before reaching Port Chalmers and did a roaring trade until anchor was dropped. Coverlid afterwards had a shop at Wetherstones and afterwards started a brewery, where the Black Horse Brewery was afterwards, Mr McEachern believes. Evidence that at least some of the McEachens stayed, comes at the end of the article which refers to how Mr McEachern(sic) had been advised to go no further with gold searching but how he did nevertheless:-
"His last try was at Hamilton's. He left there in 1864 for the Picton rush, voyaging in the ill-fated steamer City of Dunedin, which was lost with every soul on board a few trips later. He was not successful, and returned to Dunedin, where he started work as photographer."

Maria died on 9 January 1872 at her residence in Alton Street. The death was accidental, the result of dislocation of neck in a fall. The coroner thought that she may have fallen in a faint from a sitting position in a chair. She was found by her daughter, a Mrs Blincoe. at Nelson, New Zealand, at age 60.14,15 She was coroner's report on 13 January 1872 at Nelson, New Zealand;

Nelson Examiner 13 01.1872

Coroner's Inquest
An inquest was held before the Coroner, Dr, Squires, on Thursday morning, on the body of Mrs. McEachen, of Alton Street. The deceased, who was sixty-two years of age, was living alone, her husband, who is a carpenter, being at work at Spring Grove.
She was last seen alive on Tuesday evening, about half-past six, by a neighbour, Mrs Smith. when she appeared in good health and spirits. On the following morning, her grand-daughter called with a small parcel sent by her mother, but getting no reply when she knocked, opened the door and put the parcel inside. On the afternoon Mrs. Blincoe, daughter of the deceased, went to the house, and finding no reply to her repeated calls, went to her mother's bed-room, where she found her quite dead. She had evidently been sitting down, and had fallen forward, probably from giddiness. She was on her knees with her hands stretched out, and her head fairly tucked into her chest so that neither head nor face was visible. Dr Sealy, who was sent for, gave it as his opinion that the deceased, in falling forward, dislocated her neck - an opinion which was verified when examining the body. - and that death had been instantaneous. No doubt the poor woman met her death between the time she was seen by Mrs. Smith on Tuesday evening, and dark, as the lamp had been trimmed but not lighted. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.

The given name Sandeman may have come from surname of a friend or relative. There was a Sandeman family living in Broughty Ferry at the same time as James and Janet and they may have been friends. The parish register listed two baptisms at Monifieth, Angus, Scotland - Peter Sandeman son of John Sandeman and Charlotte Bowman in (Balmatie mitt) born 20 July 1811, bap 25 July 1811 and George Sandeman bap 18 May 1814..3,4

He was baptized on 26 January 1842.When John and Elizabeth attended the parish church in New Kilpatrick for the baptism of Peter Dale McDowall on 1842, John again gave his occupation as a policeman.7 It is also interesting that this son was named Peter, probably for the minister who officiated at their wedding. Peter was not with John and Elizabeth on the voyage to Australia and it seems likely he died as an infant. A second son James was born at Milngavie on 31 December 1843 and baptized on 14 January 1844. Peter died say 1843.

William was born at Port Molneux, New Zealand, in March 1872. Notes for WILLIAM MCDOWALL:
From notes made up by Margaret McDowall nee Crawford, wife of Alistair McDowall, b. 1945.
"William was born at Port Molyneux, NZ. on March 1872. Went to school at Albany Street, St Leonards, Ravensbourne, Mcandrew Road and Mornington. Was a Master Mariner. He died at Portobello, N.E. in April, 1916."

Death of Capt. William McDowall
From a newspaper obituary, April 1916.
His many friends in this district will learn with deep regret of the sudden death, at Portobello. on Monday morning last, of Captain William McDowall. Our exchanges state that deceased, who was well known as captain of the ferry steamer Waikana, was about his usual duties on Sunday last and was found dead in his bed early on the the morning stated. An inquest was held on Tuesday in Dunedin into the death of deceased. Dr Evans who performed a post mortem examination, said that he found the heart extremely enlarged, weighing 3 lb. instead of the normal 11 oz. There was well-marked disease of the mitral and aortic valves, the heart muscle was degenerated, and there was old inflammation of the pericardium. The cause of death, in the opinion of the doctor, was cardiac failure due to enlargement of the valves. Evidence was also given by the deceased's brother George McDowall and Roland Angelo. formerly of Queenstown, who stayed with Captain McDowall on the night that he died. The coroner, Mr Bartholomew, S.M. gave his verdict in accordance with the medical testimony. Deceased, who was 44 years of age, was the third son of the late Captain J. McDowall , and of Mrs McDowall, a former resident of this town. He served many years in the Lake Wakatipu Service and qualified as Master during the period of his employment. Some four or five years ago deceased left Queenstown and went to the North Island, but returned to the South again. Deceased was well and favourably known in Queenstown and was popular in shipping circles in Dunedin. He leaves a widow, for whom much sympathy is felt. There was no family.

From the early twentieth century "Cyclopaedia of New Zealand" in the section of "Country Towns and Districts" P. 1027.

Captain William McDowall who has held a captain's certificate since May 1904, is the first mate on the s.s. "Mountaineer," the finest vessel of the small fleet of Government steamers trading on Lake Wakatipu. Mr McDowall was born at Port Molyneux, in 1872. He attended school at St. Leonards, Ravensbourne. Dunedin, and South Dunedin. At the age of fifteen he went to sea out of Dunedin, on coastal steamers, and after six months, commenced to get general experience in mercantile life. On April, 1893, Captain McDowall settled in Queenstown, and commenced working on local steamers in 1896. He was appointed mate on the s.s."Mountaineer" in 1891, and has on occasions acted as relieving captain on the s.s. "Antrim."1 William died in April 1916 at Portobello, New Zealand, at age 44.

Children
William McDowall was born say 1850; I originally included this family because there appeared to be a possible connection through association with the surname Morrissey. A Margaret Morrissey and a James Morrissey were witnesses to the wills of William McDowall son of John McDowall and Elizabeth Carrick and also of his widow Emily Jane Mcdowall mn Thomas. George Johnstone McDowall, son of WIlliam Mcdowall and Agnes Johnstone married a May Cecilia Morrissey in Melbourne. However I now know that this family came from Wigtown in Scotland about 1875 and much later than John and Elizabeth. The Morrissy surname is probably completely coincidental and not connected. He married Agnes Johnson on 4 December 1873 at Wigtown, Scotland.1 William McDowall immigrated in 1883; This family probably arrived in Melbourne about 1883/4.
