There are several entries for an Alexander Cameron associated with printing and publishing during the 1830's but it has not been possible to find further information. A note from the Edinburgh P.O. Directories 1835-6 lists Alexander Cameron, writer at 38 Castle St., Edinburgh. Also in 1835-6, Cameron& Co. were paper makers in 79 Adam Square Edinburgh.
Alexander Cameron appeared on the census of 1841 He was a journeyman printer age 39 and living in 240 Canongate, Old Church, Edinburgh in the household of Walter and Mary Herd.4
Alexander Cameron appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at Edinburgh, Scotland. The entry was very faded but it seems likely that he was living in some kind of communal accommodation - perhaps an institution. I could not decipher his occupation.
There was another Alexander Cameron, book binder but my research indicates that although this Alexander had a daughter named Grace, he was married to a McPherson.5 Alexander died after 1868. The Marriage certificate of his daughter Grace in 1863 stated that her father was a printer but there was not a note that he was deceased. The death of Alexander Cameron has not been found in the Scottish Death index..

Grace was born at Scotland say 1838. Grace gave her mothe'rs name as Elizabeth Marshall and I have been unable to find a baptism for a Grace Cameron with the correct mother. Perhaps Grace was not baptised. (There was a Grace MacPherson Cameron dr of Alexander Cameron Book binder and Catharine Oliphant bap in Edinburgh parish on 7 June 1837).
Grace Cameron appeared on the census of 1841 at Edinburgh, Scotland. She was age 3 and living with her mother Elizabeth b.1806, Elizabeth b.1824, Elizabeth b.1836. They were living at New St Edinburgh, Midlothian Parish.( Need to recheck this) Her father was at a different address.1
Grace Cameron appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Edinburgh, Scotland. Grace was a domestic servant and living at 115 Cowgate. There were a large number of persons at this address and it may well have been an institution.
She gave the information that she was 22 and had been born in West Kirk, Edinburgh.2
I haven't discovered what happened to her mother but Grace appears to have been on her own in Edinburgh and life would have been hard. However it would have been a big decision to leave Scotland and travel on her own to Australia but the possibility of an assisted passage was obviously an incentive. She left Edinburgh on 9 June 1861, sailing on the Atlanta to Melbourne..3 Grace immigrated.
She married Richard Hill at St John's Church of England, Latrobe St, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, on 7 April 1863.4 As of 7 April 1863,her married name was Hill.4
Life in Melbourne would not have been easy for Grace. No record of any of her own family coming to Australia has so far been found and any female support would have had to be given by her husband's mother Eleanor or his brother's wives. Eleanor was the midwife at the birth of the third son Benjamin Harrison Hill and other family members named children after her, so perhaps she was part of that family circle.
Grace died on 3 November 1879 at Henry Street, Collingwood, Victoria, Australia. Cause of death was Breast cancer and exhaustion. Grace had born eight boys and one girl of whom six survived her. When compared with the family of Richard's brother Joseph and his wife Sophia who had died four years earlier, this family had fared reasonably well. When Grace died, the baby girl Eleanor would have been only 8 months old, leaving Richard with 6 children aged between 13 and 8 months..5 Her body was interred on 4 November 1879 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, at Melbourne General Cemetery (Baptist B No.139A).6

Christian was born at Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, before 11 July 1814. Following the Scottish naming pattern the first daughter was usually named after the mother's mother and the second daughter after the father's mother. The pattern "broke down if a parent had the same given name as one of the grandparents"( Win). Nevertheless it is likely that Christina was the name of one of the grandmothers, There was a James Carrick with a mother named Christian.. ITAL:John McDowall shoemaker in Glasgow and Elizabeth Carrick residing there were married 1 December 1840 by Mr Peter MacMorlan, minister of St Matthew Anderston. This was five days before John's 28th birthday and Elizabeth was 22.3 Elizabeth was not listed with John for the 1841 Census. She may have been the Elizabeth noted in this record but the age does not match and I have no other record of this child who would have been born before the marriage. Much searching found no other possibilities in Lanarkshire or Dumbartonshire. Elizabeth, as Peter Dale McDowall's mother, presented him at his baptism on 26 January 1842. She emigrated with John McDowall, James McDowall and John McDowall the Elder, on 23 November 1847. Point of origin: (an unknown value).4
Elizabeth was the spouse of John McDowall when he immigrated on 15 April 1848.4
She emigrated on 28 February 1854, leaving from Nelson NZ to go tor Melbourne. Her husband had left for Australia some seven months earlier and doubtless had written for her to follow him. She was listed as travelling on the Rolla, a ship of only 164 tons, with her own 6 children and the McEachern family..5,6 Elizabeth and her children joined her husband in Collingwood. Elizabeth, James, John, William, Archibald and Robert arrived in Melbourne AUS on the Rolla.. Only these five sons were listed as passengers - James, John, William, Archibald and Robert. The first born son Peter Dale McDowall was not listed with either parent. Elizabeth's age was given as 28 when in fact she was 35..5 They witnessed Robert McDowall's death at Johnson Street, Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, on 22 April 1854.7
Elizabeth was listed in a directory at Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, in 1861. The grocer's business at 98 Johnston Street was in her name..8 She resided at Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, on 20 December 1882, 99 Johnstone Street. Elizabeth was listed in a directory at Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, in 1885. When her husband John died in 1882, Elizabeth was unable to continue business as a shoemaker /grocer but instead was listed as a draper..
Elizabeth Carrick negotiated a mortgage of six hundred and thirty pounds on the property in Johnston Street Collingwood on 13 September 1886
It should be noted that on the following 25 July, her daughter Elizabeth bought a property in Clarke Street. A second purchase seems to have been made on 11 September 1889 for a property in Gotch Park.
Note:- I have notes but have not followed these documents further. Elizabeth was listed in a directory in 1890. The draper business was located at 111 Johnston Street. Perhaps there was a renumbering of the street..9
Elizabeth died on 24 May 1896 at Wellington Street, Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, at age 77. She was actually 1 week short of her 78th birthday, suffered from senile decay, acute rheumatics, and had cardiac failure one week prior to her death. Her son William McDowall of Fairfield Park recorded her father as James Carrick, compositor, and her mother as Elizabeth Carrick formerly Grant..10 Her body was interred on 26 May 1896 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, at Melbourne General Cemetery. She was buried in the same grave as her husband and her inscription reads-
