ALEX WHITAKER

FAMILY MAN prepared for Community work

Alex Whitaker was a family man and a valuable asset to the community. He was a tireless volunteer worker in Northcote and at a scout camp in Whittlesea.
Born in Ivanhoe to George and Amelia Whitaker, Alex spent his early schooldays at Ivanhoe Primary School and later attended Collingwood Technical School. He was trained as a pattern cutter in the boot trade, his profession for life.
At 17 he met his future wife Edna, and they were married in 1947, the start of a partnership of nearly 54 years. Mr. Whitaker was a great family man who loved camping and fishing. He loved to take the family – children Peter, Janet and Helen on camping trips, especially to Rye where they would spend the Christmas holidays on the foreshore.

He joined the Preston Anglers Club as a young man, holding office as secretary and committee member for 17 years.
Mr. Whitaker became the club’s salt water champion and eventually went on to become a life member. In 2001 he was awarded the gold medallion for 50 years of service.

As a family man, he took immense joy in his six grandchildren and was always on the sidelines to cheer them on.
His granddaughter Melissa played baseball for Australia and returned from Canada with a bronze medal.Mr. Whitaker regularly travelled around the state to see his grandchildren and children.

He had a lifelong association with the 1st Ivanhoe Sea Scouts Group. As a cub and later a rover he made many lasting friendships. His son Peter became a Queen’s scout at 1st Ivanhoe and much later his grandson, Daniel, also achieved his Queen’s Scout at Ivanhoe. Throughout his association with the scouts he was a committee man for many years, including holding the presidency of the Parent’s Association. With his daughter Jan and son-in-law David as leaders at 1st Ivanhoe, Mr. Whitaker never lost his enthusiasm for scouting. After his retirement, he voluntarily worked at a scout camp at Whittlesea called Camp Warringal. He spent many hours mowing and repairing the buildings. He was also on the Camp Warringal committee attending meetings where necessary.

He was a volunteer for SPAN Community House, and would arrive every day keen to find out what jobs needed to be done. Mr. Whitaker would then go to the homes of elderly people, where he would deal with any small jobs that had to be done, charging only for the materials.

In 1999 he received an Australia Day award for his work in the community.

With all these interest he still found time to do some traveling with his wife Edna. The caravan would be hitched up and they would head for Queensland for the winter. While playing bowls and fishing they made many friendships up at Burrum Heads. Mr. Whitaker lived life to the fullest and was always available for his family despite all his outside interests. He was very caring and kind and mad an impression on everyone who met him.

Mr. Whitaker died of cancer just eight weeks after diagnosis. He is survived by his wife, three children and six grandchildren.

Arthur was born at Richmond, Victoria, Australia, on 4 January 1892.1 When his father died, Arthur was 15. As far as is known, he did not go with his mother and the younger children to Korrumbunna. He was probably not trained in any trade and was limited in the kind of work he could find. Nevertheless he would have had to fend for himself. Eventually he was to find work with a Chinese stall holder in the Victorian Market. He was employed in the market for about 30 years and during this time he became very fluent in speaking the Chinese language.

He married Stella Mary Ann Lever on 13 May 1912. He was then 20. Their first son William Arthur Henry Ross was born on 14 May 1913 and died on 14 January the following year. World War 2 had begun later that year although Arthur had tried to enlist he was not accepted because of his shortness of stature.      The family lived in 514 Canning Street Carlton. Stella was to have increasingly bad health from diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and became confined to a wheelchair.
After their mother's death, Arthur had apparently kept in touch with his half brother William Ganley McDonell. William's daughter Betty McDonell was to become a regular visitor at his home and was well known to his adult children as their cousin. Joan remembers the frequent visits of this cousin of her husband to the family home. Betty also lived in Carlton, about 10 blocks away from the Whitakers. The family stories that Betty recounted, particularly about the women, seem to be part of her own mother's story rather than the McDonell/ Whitaker women. He was registered to vote in 1931 at Carlton, Victoria, Australia, Arthur and Stella were living at 128 Faraday St. Carlton. Arthur had changed his job and was working in Sales.3

Douglas was born on 29 July 1916.1

Douglas Lever Whitaker began military service on 23 October 1939 at Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia, He had been living in North Carlton and his next of Kin was his mother Stella Whitaker.2 An announcement listing Victorians mentioned in Dispatches included "Private Douglas L Whitaker son of Mr. and Mrs. A Whitaker of 514 Canning St., North Carlton, who enlisted in 1939. He was educated at Faraday St. State School Carlton, and played football with the Victorian Railways for some years." A second article noted that Cpl L Whitaker had sailed in the first contingent on 19 April and had served in the Sudan, Egypt, East Africa, Western Desert, Greece, Crete, Syria and Tobruk.

Apparently some of the family kept in touch because these cuttings were amongst the memorabillia in Jim's wallet.3 I have been told that Douglas married a Canadian nurse and subsequently joined the Canadian Airforce.

He married Alberta Gibson. Douglas Lever Whitaker ended military service on 15 March 1949 His final posting with the Australian Army was to the 2/5 AUSTRALIAN INFANTRY BATTALION and he had reached the rank of Lieutenant.2

Sometime after completing his term with the Canadian Airforce, Douglas returned to Australia and eventually bought land in Maryborough Queensland where he established a Macadamia Nut Farm.

His brother's widow Joan and his cousin Alec visited him regularly on their annual Queensland holidays. When I discovered this, I decided that as he and Bob were first cousins I would make contact and on one of my trips to Queensland with Bob, I drove to Maryborough and rang Doug. We visited his home and had afternoon tea. Although at that stage he would have been 70, he was still a very hansome man with tight curly hair, probably inherited from his grandmother Bessie Whitaker. Doug said he was then having memory problems but was still living on his own on the property. We also met his grandson who helped him with the business.      Freda Whitaker Written by Meg

Freda was born at home, 123 Bent St. Northcote on 9th October 1922 to parents George and Amelia Whitaker and lived there for the first two years of her life. The family moved to Ivanhoe and Freda grew up and went to school with her brother Alexander Albert. She joined the Ivanhoe Brownies, Girl Guides and later the Rangers, becoming a Brownie pack leader.

After leaving school, Freda worked at Foy and Gibson, then left to work in the office.at the British United Shoe Machinery Co..

In 1946 Freda met her husband to be Ron Fraser, when he came to work with her father in the surgical boot-making trade. They married on 22nd February 1947, living in Benalla for 9 months before Freda returned to Melbourne to reside with her family and work at BUSMC while Ron gained employment in Mt Beauty with the SEC.

Bruce Alexander was born on 25th November 1948 in Ivanhoe and the two travelled to Mt Beauty to join Ron when a house became available. Margaret Anne and Malcolm Ronald were also born at Airlee after Freda made the journey from Mt Beauty to have the security of parental support post-natally.

In 1954 the family shifted to their lifetime home in Kangaroo Flat. Freda worked at Gillie Pies while attending night school to study and refresh her typing and shorthand skills, which eventually landed her a secretarial position at Cowlings from 1961 until it closed in 1969. After a few temporary positions, Freda gained work at United Breweries, working there for 10 years until her well-earned retirement in 1981.

Freda became an exceptional “Knit Wit” turning out beautiful garments and on many occasions was asked to model them at Knit Wit parades. She also loved knitting and until arthritis prevented her form knitting heavy jumpers. Not to be put off, she took to knitting and is still at 85 yrs of age knitting baby clothes for missions supported by the Baptist Church at Kangaroo Flat. Freda has found much support, encouragement and fellowship from her recent return to the Baptist Church and the Golden Square Anglican Church where she has worshipped for around thirty years. Of course, being Freda she has given most generously of her time and effort within these two communities. Freda believes in sharing herself and her skills to the fullest. She and Ron became co-coordinators for the local Neighborhood Watch program continuing this for several years after Ron’s death.

In 1954 Freda joined the RLS Women’s Auxiliary and held the position of secretary for about 14 years, before retiring in November 2007. She is a life member of the Auxiliary and an Associate member of the RSL being awarded a certificate of Merit and the Life membership in recognition of her outstanding support of and work for the Kangaroo Flat RSL.

Freda is a very warm, generous, and caring woman, who was a loving and supporting wife to Ron and is a faithful friend and confidant to her children all within her circle of friendship. Freda was born at Northcote, Victoria, Australia, on 9 October 1922. She married Ronald Wallace Fraser at Ivanhoe, Victoria, Australia, on 22 February 1947. Freda May Whitaker died on 18 June 2014 at Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, at age 91. She was buried on 24 June 2014 at Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. A Service of Thanksgiving was held at St Mark's Anglican Church, Golden Square.

He married Amelia Freda Caulfield at Ivanhoe, Victoria, Australia, on 23 March 1921.2 George died on 18 June 1976 at Ivanhoe, Victoria, Australia, at age 79.
These brief notes on the life of George Alexander Whitaker was written by his daughter Freda.

George was born on the 12th May 1897 to Elizabeth Bane McDonell and Henry Whitaker

The earliest Dad ever talked about was when they lived in Jumbunna where he went to school. He told the story of the day he wagged school to work in the mines with the horses for a whole halfpenny. Unfortunately he talked in his sleep which resulted in his getting the biggest hiding of his life.

After his mother died the family was split up and he went to live with his Uncle Angus. He didn't talk much about those days. In his early teenage days he joined the I.O.R. in Northcote and went right through the chairs. As he grew older he played football with the Ivanhoe Football Club. Later he went on to being a Goal Umpire and First Aid Attendant at other clubs. He also played cricket and umpired. When his active time passed he moved into the administrative section of these two sports for many years.

When it was time for him to earn his living he went to work with Uncle Angus who taught him the trade of Surgical Bootmaker.

In 1921 he married Amelia Caulfield and they built a house in Livingstone St., Ivanhoe. They had two children, Freda and Alex, before they divorced in 1937. Later he married Florence Patterson.

After Dad married Amelia he opened his own business starting in a little back room in Melbourne. Eventually he moved to Swanston St. behind John Rosier & Sons, Chiropodists where he stayed until he went into semi-retirement and worked from home. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 50 years, and just before he died he was presented with his 50 year certificate.
Late in life he developed cancer of the larynx but continued to work until he died on 18th June 1976 aged 79.3

Henry Whittaker was born say 1771 at Lancashire, England, This birth date is calculated from the age of 51 as given on his burial entry in 1822. However the age given on death entries is not always correct.
A baptism record has not been found.2 He married Ann Stephenson on 4 February 1787 at Padiham, Lancashire, England; There were several possible marriages but the listing of a widow at his final address in Manchester indicates the name of his wife was Anne. There was a burial entry for an Ellen, wife of Henry WHITEHEAD of Simonstone in the Padiham Parish register. The writer of the copy submitted as Bishop's Transcripts had miss-interpreted it as WHITTAKER.3 Henry Whittaker moved before 1808 at Manchester, Lancashire, England.
Henry Whitaker was a paviour living at 34 Well Street, Manchester in 1808 and listed in the Dean's Directory of Manchester. In the same directory there was a Lawrence Whittaker, butcher advertising from 7 Fennel St and by 1811 Henry had also moved to 7 Wright's-court, Fennel Street which curves around the back of the Manchester Cathedral. it is noted that there had been a Lawrence living in Whalley- possibly a brother or uncle.
Henry advertised from this address either as a pavier or a painter in Slaters or Pigots Directories of Manchester until 1821. It is probable that his family remained at that address until 1828 when Ann Whittaker widow placed an entry in the directory.
1808 Henry Whittaker, pavier, 34 Wells Street
     1813 Henry Whittaker, pavier, 7 Wright's-court, Fennel-st
     1815 Henry Whittaker, painter, 7 Wright's court, Fennel-street
     1817 Henry Whittaker, pavier, Wright's-court, Fennel-street
     1819-20 Henry Whittaker, pavier, 7 Wright's-court, Fennel-street
     1821-22 Henry Whittaker, pavier, 7 Wright's-court, Fennel-street
     1828 Ann Whitaker, widow, Wright's-court, Fennel-street
It may not be the same person but the following year an Ann Whittaker widow was living at 10 Back Davies Street in one of the crowded new developments hurriedly built to house the great wave of persons seeking work in the big city.
It is of interest that the next three generations of Whittakers in Manchester were also paviours living in the same area, and that as each son became old enough to take charge of the business, the directory listing changed accordingly. It is also significant that George was to name his eldest son Henry.4,5
Henry died on 10 December 1822 at his home in 7 Fennel Street at No. 7 Fennel St., Manchester, Lancashire, England. His age was given as 51, he was married and the cause of death was fever..2 He was buried on 15 December 1822 at Manchester, Lancashire, England, after a service at the Cathedral. His occupation was noted as a pavior. However an entry was also found in the Salford Bible Christian Registers. In this entry Henry was noted as a painter. It gave his full address as 7 Wright's court Fennel St.2,6

Marriage*
Henry jnr Whitaker married Harriet Elizabeth Wright, daughter of William Wright, at Christ Church on 25 December 1875 at Crewe, Cheshire, England, Henry was noted as a steel worker, son of a Henry Whittaker deceased and at the time of his marriage he lived in Manchester. Harriet (Elizabeth) was the daughter of William Wright and her home at the time of marriage was Crewe. Henry was apparently temporarily away from Manchester at this date, perhaps looking for work. However following the marriage he and Harriet returned to Chorlton in Manchester where their first daughter was born.

It is believed that in 1871 Harriett was living in Chorlton with her widowed mother Ann, three brothers, a married sister and two grandchildren who had been born in Crewe, Cheshire. Her father William, who was a tailor, had apparently died in the previous year. Harriet had begun to work as a sewing machinist, but eventually she was to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a tailoress.
When they decided to get married, Harriet was in Crewe in Cheshire, probably with the relatives she had there and Henry appears to have joined her.ii The 1871 census records show two grandchildren who had been born in Crewe, Cheshire living with Harriet’s family in Manchester. Banns proclaiming their proposed marriage were read in Christ Church, Crewe and the wedding took place on Saturday 25 December 1875. iiii England, Marriage Certificate, Certified copy of an entry in a Marriage Register, Henry Whitaker and Harriet Wright, Nantwich, Vol. 8a Fol.513 Henry had again changed trades and was noted as a steel worker, son of Henry Whittaker, deceased and he gave his address as Manchester.      Henry was born at 9 Tuer Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, England, on 3 December 1854. Henry was a younger brother of our Arthur Henry Whitaker. His birth and his residence with his parents until 1861 has been confirmed. It has also been possible to trace his life from his marriage to Harriet Wright, his residence in 1881, his advertisements for work as a pavier and his immigration and death in Australia..1
He was baptized at the Cathedral church, Manchester, Lancashire, England, on 24 December 1854. .2 They was listed as a resident in the census report at 9 Tuer Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, England, on 7 April 1861.3 He was listed as a resident in the census report at 27 Welbeck St., Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, England, on 2 April 1871. It was noted that he was an adopted member of the Holgate family in whose household he was living. This conclusion is supported by the naming of his first child as Alice Holgate Whittaker..4

The census on 3 April 1881 listed Henry as head of household living at the Starr Inn 22 Welbeck St Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester. Henry was 26 and lived with his wife Harriet and daughters Alice and Ann. They had 2 boarders and Henry worked as a pavior and beer retailer. His surname in the transcription had been mis-spelled as Wittiker.6 Henry was listed in a directory at Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, England, in 1883. He was living at 19 Tuer St Chorlton on Medlock..7
Immigration records for this family have not been confirmed despite extensive research of both Victorian and NSW shipping lists. A daughter Jessie was born in Chorlton in Sept Qr 1885 and Emily Victoria was born in Melbourne in 1887 indicating the arrival of the family about between those births..
Henry may have sailed earlier than Elizabeth and have found some possible records but a record including the children with their mooher has bot been found.

Henry jnr Whitaker died on 7 February 1924 at Moonee Ponds, Victoria, Australia, at age 69 The sudden death was the result of "rupture of the heart". Because the death was not certified a post mortem was conducted by Dr Collinson on 19 February. The Coroner Mr Harriman ordered that burial could proceed as an inquest was not necessary. The information given for the death certificate included the name of his father as Hy Whitaker contractor. The informant to the coroner had been a local constable who may not have known or sought full details of the family and unfortunately Henry's mother was given as unknown. However Henry had been orphaned at a very young age and may never have talked about his mother. The identification of his mother would have confirmed if he was in fact a brother of Arthur Henry. Ten children were identified, two having died before their father.15,16

James Whitaker was born before 17 November 1833 at Manchester, Lancashire, England. A birth date was not added to the baptism entry so it isn't possible to know if this was an infant baptism or an older child.2 He was baptized at Manchester, Lancashire, England, on 17 November 1833. His father George was a Paviour living in Irk Street.3 James was not listed with the family in 1841. If he was baptised as an older child in 1833 he may have left home and been working. It is also possible that he had died before this date. It is possible he was the James Whitaker who travelled with a Henry Whitaker to Australia on the Garonne in 1885. He died.

James was born 10 Henty Street at Richmond, Victoria, Australia, on 24 May 1899. And was the fourth of five surviving children of Arthur Henry Whitaker and Bessie McDonell. His two given names Albert and Victor were chosen because this was the birthday of Queen Victoria..1 Fill in where etc and some history of the area.

Dad's parents, Arthur Whitaker and Bessie McDonell had died when Dad was quite young and if he knew or remembered the tragic story of his mother, it was never talked about. His father seems to have been a somewhat shadowy figure in his life and I seldom heard him mentioned. Uncle Ern was always the father figure.

The death of his father Arthur Henry Whitaker on 15 February 1907 was to have a profound effect on the whole family. James was only 7, possibly having just started school, and for a seven year old, the whole concept of death would have been very confusing and frightening, particularly as children were not always told what was going on.2

When Elizabeth married Samuel Harwood and moved to Korumburra, James went with his mother; William Ganley appears to have stayed with his grandparents and if Arthur Henry Ross was already working, he would also have stayed in Melbourne leaving Bessie to take the younger children with her.

Living in a small mining community was very different from living in Richmond. Attendance of the children at the local primary school was compulsory even though it may have been somewhat irregular. A report on the primary school made on 30 April 1907, gives a very bleak picture of the condition of the buildings. The room housing up to 83 Class 1 children was very small and inadequate, and additional accommodation was needed for all junior classes. The climate was noted as very bleak with an annual rainfall of 45 to 50 ins. Roads were bad and wet in winter and there was no porch to shelter the doors from the prevailing winds. Downpipes and spouting were nearly all broken, one of the tanks had no tap, and several of the school forms were unfit for any child to sit on. Urinals and closets were in a very bad state and of the two available for boys, one was used as a storehouse for wood. Because the urinal had no drainage, the refuse simply ran over the footpath outside. No gravel had been put on the grounds for many years and pools of water resulted in much mud and dirt inside the classrooms.he was to attend school at Korumburra, Victoria, Australia, in 1907.

It was during the time at Korumburra that James had a mishap which was to result in deafness for the rest of his life. He had been playing on the beach when a shell was pushed into his ear. This was not properly attended at the time and later when other family members realised his disability, no action was taken. Eventually he had to get a hearing aid but he was always at a disadvantage. When he was caring for Grace, towards the end of their life together, his inability to hear her if she needed him caused him to enquire about the availability of an operation to improve his hearing. To his delight, he found that this was entirely possible and although he was about 70 he decided to go ahead. The operation was successfull and greatly improved their life together.

Although Samuel Harwood had only been their stepfather for a short time, he would have given some security to both Bessie and her children. His sudden death from pnuemonia was another blow to the family.2 Just one week after the death of Samuel Harwood, Bessie's father William McDonell also died.

The next 11 months were very difficult for Bessie and the children. The insurance money due from the death of Arthur Henry Whitaker was probably all gone and she had no male to support herself and the 4 children. She made a trip to Melbourne early in 1909 with the 4 children in the hope of getting help from her family. Her brother Angus McDonell of Beaver's road Northcote later gave evidence that on that occasion he had adopted the older boy George but Bessie had taken the two girls and James with her back to Jumbunna. The memory of their mother's final illness and the train journey taking her to the hospital in Melbourne would have stayed with them. Her tragic death on 19 Oct 1909 was the fourth significant loss to the family in a little over two years. James and his siblings were suddenly orphaned and dependant on the ability and generosity of uncles and aunts to care for them. James was then only 10.2

James and his younger sister were given a home by their uncle Ern who was 7 years younger than Bessie. Ernest had married Mabel Pascall, daughter of George Pascall a sweets manufacturer in 1904 and they were living at 82 York St. Richmond. When the Whitaker children came to live with them they had only one child Ernest Pascall, then about a year old. Suddenly they had to cope with 10 year James and 5 year old Bella. James thought highly of both his aunt and uncle but he always said Aunty Mabel had been very hard on him.

As one of the younger members of his generation, Ernest had been fortunate to stay at school longer than his siblings. For many years he worked as a clerk in George Pascall's office but eventually he set up his own business of "Merle Shoes" with a small retail outlet in High St Northcote. Although Ern didn't send Jim to Grammar school as he was able to do for his own children, he nevertheless encouraged him in other ways. Jim was awarded the Junior Swimming certificate in 1912 and was to become a good swimmer, winning the father son race when his own son joined the YMCA. He was trained in the shoe trade as a pump stitch operator. After the birth of Merle in 1913 Ern and Mabel moved to 59 Locksley Road Ivanhoe where the family was joined by the grandparents, Elizabeth and George Pascall.

James was not happy and eventually ran away, making his way to Queensland, and finding whatever work he could on the way. He was treated as an equal by other rouseabouts although he was to tell his grandsons how the older men made him do all the heavy jobs such as carrying large bags of potatoes on his back. He probably had a pretty hard time.

James Albert Victor Whitaker began military service in July 1916 at Emerald, Queensland, Australia, When he enlisted in 1916, he had been managing on his own and may well not have been concerned that he was supposed to have permission from a parent or guardian. In any case he put his age up by 4 years. When he was due to be sent overseas he made the mistake of having photos taken of himself in uniform and sending these to his Aunt Mabel and one of their friends. He always said Mabel "dobbed him in" but saved his life because the ship on which he was due to embark was sunk.3 He ended military service on 10 October 1916 at Seymour, Victoria, Australia, He had been serving as a Private in the No.21 Machine Gun Depot and was discharged for being under the age of 18 years. The certificate was issued on 13 Jamuary 1917 at Seymour. A Certficate of Character was also given, stating that his conduct whilst in the army had been good. He was a labourer 5 ft. 7 ins. with fair hair and complexion and blue eyes. His intended place of residence was given as 34 Wolslely Road Ivanhoe Vic.3

James Albert Victor Whitaker went back to live with Ern and Mabel after his discharge from the army. He continued working as a shoemaker, perhaps in his uncle's factory. Following in his McDonell grandfather's footsteps he also became a volunteer fireman at Ivanhoe. This was where he met Grace Hill, daughter of the captain of the Ivanhoe Fire Brigade who lived with her father at the fire station.

He married Grace Christina Hill at Ivanhoe, Victoria, Australia, on 15 March 1924. They were married by the Baptist minister in the board room at the fire station..

Following their marriage Jim and Grace moved into a small house in Dennis Street Darebin, which had belonged to her father. When they could manage they bought a block of land in Athelstane Grove Ivanhoe and proceeded to have a new home built. James became a member of the Darebin Lodge at Ivanhoe, Victoria, Australia, on 18 January 1927. Ern and his cousin Pascall were also members. When he and Grace moved to Chelsea he transferred his membership there. He made some very good friends and when his son Robert turned 18, he was initiated as a ???. They were then actually living in Northcote but they made the regular monthly train trip to Chelsea together. James regretted that he had not been able to proceed through the ranks of Office because of his hearing problem but supported Bob when they both became fondation members of the Reservoir Lodge. He was very proud when Bob became Master in 1970. He was a member for 47 years.. Because the Whitaker children were separated at such an early age, there was not a close relationship between all the siblings. However his brother George also lived in Ivanhoe and for many years Jim worked a couple of nights each week for George who was a surgical bootmaker. We got to know George's children Freda and Alec. Bob sang at both their weddings and I was the organist. In later years Jim seldom made contact with his older brother Arthur Henry Ross Whitaker although we went to his funeral. He had completely lost touch with his two sisters.
His uncle Ern McDonell had taken him in when his mother died and apparently Dad regularly rode his bicycle to visit Ern in Ivanhoe. Dad talked about his cousins but they were not on regular visiting terms. However uncle Ern and his second wife were guests at our wedding. He moved in 1934 at Chelsea, Victoria, Australia, Grace's father moved to Chelsea and suggested Jim and Grace should follow them. They sold the house in Ivanhoe and moved to the beach, living first in Edithvale and then in Chelsea. They joined the Congregational church as there was no Baptist church nearby and became firm friends of the minister Rev Ferris and also of Mal and EIleen Meikle. They had a very good social life during their time in Chelsea and Jim and Mal became very keen on fishing.

However they both wanted more for their son than had been possible in their own lives and decided that Northcote High School would give him better opportunities than Frankston or Mordiallic High. I understand Grace had helped her father to buy a house in Aberdeen Grove Northcote and they purchased this from him, moving in time for Bob to begin High School.
NOTE Will have to check dates from titles etc.
Jim encouraged Bob in swimming competitions and when Bob joined the Northcote High Athletics team, he was always there to watch him train.

After Bob and I met and Bob became interested in singing, they found the money for him to have lessons and followed him to many of the competitions, including staying in both Ballarat and Bendigo. He moved say 1939 at Northcote, Victoria, Australia, About 1940 Jim and Grace moved into 9 Aberdeen Grove Northcote. (Year needs to be checked- perhaps old electoral rolls) This was to enable Bob to go to Northcote High School which was one of only half a dozen High Schools in Melbourne and had a very good reputation. They decided Bob would get a better education than at the Mordiallic High School where he would have attended if they stayed at Chelsea. Transport and a job for Jim may also have been a factor also because Aberdeen Grove property was half a block from the school and Jim could easily get work in the Collingwood area. He moved on 13 September 1960 at Rosanna, Victoria, Australia; James and Grace decided to move to Rosanna to be near their son. A property at 20 Darvall St was bought on 13 September 1960. They moved temporarily to Bellevue Avenue with Bob's family whilst they had some alterations done to the Darvall Street property.4 He left a will.

James died on 24 March 1974 at Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia, at age 74. His body was interred on 20 May 1974 at Heidelberg, Victoria, Australia. Jim's ashes were placed in the family grave by Margaret and Ian Whitaker..5 His estate was probated in 1976.
