Eleanor was the spouse of Joseph Hill when he immigrated on 23 April 1855.4,5 At Benjamin Harrison Hill's birth, on 15 June 1868 at Yarra Park Street, Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, she assisted as a midwife. The birth was registered by his grandmother Eleanor Hill on 11 August 1868. Mrs Hill of Stanley and Cambridge Streets Collingwood (possibly the grandmother) was the midwife. The mother,Grace Hill formerly Cameron, was age 29 and had been born in Scotland..6 She resided at Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, on 11 August 1868, at the corner of Stanley and Cambridge Street.

Eleanor died on 6 July 1874 at Henry Street, Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, at age 61. Before 18 April 1891 Benjamin was employed by the Clifton Hill Temperance Fire Brigade as a blacksmith. During this time he was also employed as an auxiliary fireman. He was invited to a special meeting of the Clifton Hill Brigade at 8 pm on 22 April 1891 to consider the winding up of the Brigade. On 30 April the Chief Officer of the Metropolitan Fire Brigades board disbanded the old brigades. The Fire Brigades Act of 1890 had specified that preference for employment should be given to members of the old volunteer brigades.. On 1 January 1892 Benjamin was appointed as a Fireman with the newly formed Metropolitan Fire Brigade and stationed at Prahran, Victoria, Australia. His service record notes his height as 5' 11 3/4", and his previous employment by the Clifton Hill Brigade as a blacksmith. He was also a member of the Auxiliary Metropolitan Fire Brigade..4 31 December 1892 Benjamin was transferred to at East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. On 1 November 1893. Benjamin was appointed to (an unknown value) at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, This appears to have been the Melbourne No 2 station.5 Circa 1895 Benjamin was transferred to the South Melbourne Station. It was during his appointment at South Melbourne that his first two children Benjamin and Grace Christina were born. Two offences were recorded against him. On 2 March 1898 he was reported for absence from the South Melbourne station without leave by Superintendanrt Loughridge. The penalty was a fine of one pound.
