James son of John Carrick of Brinfoot and Christian Roy his spouse was born in Monzie, Perthshire and baptised on19 December 1774. His birthplace and age has been confirmed by information given in the 1851 census returns.1,2

James Carrick of Monzie was baptized on 19 December 1773 at Monzie, Perth, Scotland,
The entry reads:- James son of John Carrick in Brinfoot and Christian Roy his spouse bap 19 Dec 1773.1

He resided at Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, before 20 November 1809, James had probably been working in Glasgow but for some reason was in Edinburgh for the marriage. There is currently no proof but it seems possible that he may have gone home to Monzie, a small village near Crieff, and decided to marry Catherine Grant from Creiff. Of particular interest is the use of the given name Christian for their first daughter and its contiued use for a number of generations. Bob's mother and grandmother both had Christina as a second name.

Prior to his marriage in 1809 James had been working as a weaver in Glasgow. From the middle of the eighteenth until the middle of the nineteenth century factories involved in the manufacture of wool, linen and cotton gradually ousted the craftsman. Taxation was unfavourable to the home worker and the process was accompanied by much hardship. Protests to Parliament by 12,000 Glasgow weavers had no effect. Conditions for factory workers were likewise no better. By 1783 there was a "redundancy of hands" and the owners and masters reduced wages. The weavers joined their forces in a Weavers' Union, paraded on Glasgow Green and smashed the looms operated by blacklegs. A battle ensued at Drygate Bridge in which the workers charged the troops with bricks and stones. The resulting prosecutions not only meant the end of the Union, but allowed the masters to impose even harsher conditions on the weavers. In 1808 the Scottish weavers joined the Lancashire weavers in an effort to redress some of their grievances. Their petition to Parliament to limit the number of Apprentices and fix a minimum wage failed when the Enquiry called the proposal injudicious. When they approached the Glasgow magistrates to fix wages, they were again refused. After continued wrangling in the courts moderate wages were fixed but the manufactureres refused to comply. 40,000 men went on strike for six weeks. The strike was broken when the Government arrested the leaders for trying to enforce a decision of the Court. From 1816 to 1824 there were regular outbreaks aand outrages led by the Union . This was the background in which James had to find work and may account for his visit to Edinburgh.3

He married Catharine Elizabeth Grant at Edinburgh, Scotland, on 20 November 1809.
James Carrick, weaver, Glasgow and Catharine Grant, St Andrew Church Parish, Daughter of John Grant, Tin Smith, Crieff.4

Following their marriage, James and Catharine moved to Glasgow where James found employment as a typefounder, an occupation he appears to have continued for the rest of his life.5 James Carrick of Monzie appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England. James was a Type Founder and gave his age as 65 (rounded) His son James typefounder age 25 , wife Mary Ann age 30 and their daughter Janet age 2 were living with him. The family was living in Frogmore ???. Two other type founders were also living with the family - John Campbell age 60 and a Joseph Clark 25?.6 He appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. A James Carrick aged about 77 was living with his daughter Christiana Sweenie age 36 at 124 1/2 Garscube Road, Glasgow, St George. James gave his birthplace as Monzie, Perthshire and he was reliant on the parish for support.7 James died.

Monzie and Fowlis Wester where the sons were baptised are both small villages not far from Crieff. There is a possible association with Crieff because Catherine Grant whom James Carriclk married, came from Crieff. Is it possible that James and Catherine knew each other in Crieff. John was born. A baptism has not been found for James Carrick but he was probably born near Monzie in Perthshire, Scotland.. He married Christian Roy say 1770. John died.

George's occupation was a Paviour. The large number of entries for baptisms throughout 1833 suggests that the church was making a big outreach in the community and certainly there were many older children baptised as well as the more normal infant baptisms. Although a date of birth was not included, I believe Henry would have been about 16..4 Sarah, as George Whittaker's mother, presented him at his baptism at Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England, on 17 November 1833.5 They was listed as a resident in the census report at Little Loom Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England, on 6 June 1841.6 As of 25 December 1847,her married name was Whitaker.7 They was listed as a resident in the census report at Manchester, Lancashire, England, on 30 March 1851.8 They witnessed George Whittaker's death at 30 Higham St, Manchester, Lancashire, England, on 29 July 1854.9 Sarah died before 30 July 1854 at Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, England.10 She was buried on 30 July 1854 at Chorlton on Medlock, Lancashire, England; This was just one day after the death of her grandson George, son of Walter.

James died. My notes from the Bishop's transcripts do not concur with Brian's taken from the original parish register.

Thomas Churchward married Mary Elliot on 30 June 1750 and his brother James was married on 13 July 1750 - only 13 days later. The bride is noted as Mary Bunkham but John's first child was baptised on 26 November 1751 to John and JOAN Churchward. It seems possible that the second bride was in fact Joan Bunkham not Mary Bunkum. However I haven't found a baptism for either in Buckfastleigh.

Before 1769, six children were baptised to James and Joan Churchward. The burial of Joan Churchward on 5 March 1806 could have been this Joan - estimated age 76 years.
