The Hill ancestors of Grace Christina Hill have been traced to St John's Anglican church in Limerick, Ireland, where Richard Hill was married to Elizabeth Lee in 1802. Marriage entries for this perod in Ireland seldom included an occupation for the groom or the names of parents and a record of baptism has not been found for either Richard or Elizabeth. It is not known if either of them was born there. They may have gone into Limerick for the wedding from somewhere out of Limerick. Notes added to the transcription of the parish register, suggested that families from the surrounding countryside frequently went into the city of Limerick for special family events. There are however some records surviving for the both the surnames Hill and Lee in Limerick prior to the marriage. Ferrar's Limerick directory for 1769 lists a John Lee Hill as a Captain in the XXVII Regiment stationed at the garrison. Serjeant William Hill soldier, and John Hill clothier voted in the ??election. The parish register for St Johns also includes records of marriages and baptisms for several Hill families.

Richard would have been born circa 1780.

He married Elizabeth Lee There were two marriages for a Richard Hill recorded in Limerick during this period. Although there was a ten year gap between the marriages it was possible that both marriages were for the same groom. However it seems more likely that they were separate families and that there were two men named Richard Hill.

1. The first marriage of Richard Hill, a printer to Ann Jones took place on 30 April 1791 at the Cathedral of St. Mary in Limerick. In 1791-1792 Richard Hill, printer, is listed as having a bookshop and library near the Main Guard. Richard Hill printer died in 1838 and was buried at St. Munchins, Limerick on 24 November. There was an obituary in the Limerick Chronicle stating that Richard Hill Sen., printer was an old and respectable member of that profession. Although baptisms have not to date been found for children of this marriage, the printing business appears to have been carried on by two sons - Richard a printer, and Joseph who was listed in 1840 as a bookbinder. Richard Hill junior, printer married Harriet Denmmeade in Clonmel Co. Tipperary on 4 November 1837.

2. The second marriage of a Richard Hill was to Elizabeth Lee and took place in 1802 at the old Anglican church of St. Johnns. This church is supposed to have been erected in the early part of the 15th century when the Irish town was fortified. It was rebuilt in 1843. The marriage entry for Richard Hill and Elizabeth Lee in 1802 was by license and did not record an occupation for Richard. Unfortunately the information regarding Richard's occupation which was given for the death certificate of his son in Australia is not completely legible, and could be either a painter or a printer. A painter seems more likley

Baptisms have been found for several children to this family between 1808 and 1823 although not all were celebrated in the parish of St. Johns. It was probably this Richard, who moved to London with his wife and at least two sons Sometime before 1830, Joseph the eldest son had emigrated to England where he married Eleanor Hewit. A younger brother Richard followed to London and was married in Bermondsey in 1838.

A record of a Richard Hill Brassfounder in Limerick was found in a directory of Limerick (perhaps 1824?) which has not been followed up. in the parish church of at St John's at Limerick, Ireland, on 24 January 1802.1

Information given by the Limerick Regional Archives confirmed two deaths for a Richard Hill in Limerick. Richard Hill printer was buried 24 November 1838 at St Munchin's and another Richard died in 1840. However if our Richard moved to London with his sons he may have died there.2

A burial for a Richard Hill was listed in the parish register on 9 August 1838 at Rotherhithe, London, Middlesex, England. We have no evidence of his identity. There was also a death registered at Bermondsey in Dec Qr 1837, Vol 4. Fol 86. An English death certificate would give only his age and the cause and place of death. The informant would not necessarily be a family member..3

When Grace died on 3 November 1879, Richard became a widower. Cause of death was Breast cancer and exhaustion. Grace had born eight boys and one girl of whom six survived her. When compared with the family of Richard's brother Joseph and his wife Sophia who had died four years earlier, this family had fared reasonably well. When Grace died, the baby girl Eleanor would have been only 8 months old, leaving Richard with 6 children aged between 13 and 8 months..9
