Archibald was born at Campbeltown, Argyle, Scotland, on 5 May 1817.1 He married Maria Margaret Naiper McDowall at Gorbals, Lanark, Scotland, on 4 November 1837. Both bride and groom had been living in Gorbals in Govan which is a parish of Glasgow on the south side of the river Clyde. Archibald's surname was written as McGechen..2
He emigrated, on 4 July 1842 to New Zealand as part of the Highlanders resettlement scheme. He sailed from Cumray on the Clyde on 4th July 1842 on the barque New Zealand, Two daughters aged 3 years and 1 year were listed with the parents. The Captain was C.H. Worth and the Surgeon was Dr James McNamara..3 Archibald and his family arrived in New Zealand on 4 November 1842.They were listed as passengers destined for Nelson.Describe what they wold have found in Nelson. Include the census detaila.4,5 He was listed as qualified to serve on a jury at Waimea West, New Zealand, in 1844. Jury lists were published in the "Nelson Examiner"..6 Archibald was employed as a carpenter at Nelson, New Zealand, in 1847. A census taken in 1849, listed Europeans residing at Richmond, New Zealand. Archibald who came from Scotland, was the head of a household of seven persons The household consisted of one male and one female aged between 21 and 45, one female aged between 7 and 14, one male and one female aged between 2 and 7 and one male under 2. Archibald's trade was a carpenter and the family belonged to the Church of Scotland.7
He sailed for Australia from Nelson on the Camel on 15 January 1853.8 Archibald arrived in Melbourne on 17 February 1853.. He resided at Amherst, Victoria, Australia. He and Maria Margaret Naiper McDowall ireturned in December 1862 to Otago, New Zealand. Perhaps they had not had success in the Victorian gold rush and life in Melbourne had not come up to expectations. However there would have been a strong family incentive to return to New Zealand because they had left a daughter behind in New Zealand and their son John had already gone back. With their two remaining sons, Hugh and Archibald, they left for Otago on the Dunedin in December 1862. Once again they made false declarations about their age. Maria claimed to be 33 years old when she was actually 51 and Archibald's age was given as 40 when he was actually 45.They had lived in Victoria for 9 years.9
He resided at Nelson, New Zealand, in 1865. He resided at Caversham, Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1870. Archibald died on 7 December 1893 at Caversham, Dunedin, New Zealand. He suffered from paralysis for 5 days. At the time of his death he had 3 male and 4 female children living.1

John was born at Nelson, New Zealand, say 1844. Maria, John, James, Elizabeth and Archibald travelled with his mother Maria Margaret Naiper McDowall on 29 March 1854 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.1
He moved in September 1861 at Dunedin, New Zealand. In an article prepared for the Gabriel's Gully Jubilee in 1911, my great-grandfather (Archibald and Maria's eldest son, John Allan McEachen ) related that his uncle, Mr John McDowell i.e. Maria's brother) had come "to Otago on the 'Phillip Laing' in 1848, but went to Victoria for the diggings." He also returned to NZ at the time of the Otago gold rush but as "the news from Gabriel's Gully was very conflicting on arrival, Mr McDowell decided to go no further, and obtained work at his trade as bootmaker at Port Chalmers, afterwards opening the first bootmaker's shop at Balclutha - The Ferry it was then called." Evidence that at least some of the McEachens stayed, comes at the end of the article which refers to how Mr McEachern(sic) had been advised to go no further with gold searching but how he did nevertheless:- "His last try was at Hamilton's. He left there in 1864 for the Picton rush, voyaging in the ill-fated steamer City of Dunedin, which was lost with every soul on board a few trips later. He was not successful, and returned to Dunedin, where he started work as photographer.".2,3 Notes for JOHN ALLEN MCEACHEN:

A Latecomer
Mr John McEachern, photographer, Winton, came to Dunedin in September, 1861, from Melbourne by the American ship Annie Kimball with about 450 others. Amongst these was Mr H. Coverlid, who opened a shaving saloon the day before reaching Port Chalmers, and did a roaring trade until anchor was dropped. Mr Coverlid afterwards had a shop at Wetherstones and afterwards started a brewery, where the Black Horse Brewery was afterwards, Mr McEachern believes. The latter's uncle Mr John McDowall, was also a passenger. He came to Otago in the Phillip Laing in 1848, but went to Victoria for the diggings. The news from Gabriel's Gully was very conflicting on arrival, many who were returning, declaring the field to be worked out. Mr McDowell decided to go no further, and obtained work at his trade as bootmaker at Port Chalmers, afterwards opening the first bootmaker's shop at Balclutha - the Ferry it was then called. Mr McEachern's mate also decided to go no further, and being a sailor, shipped on the three-masted schooner, John Bullock. Mr McEachern, walked out to the farm on the Taieri of Mr John Allen, sen. who had come to Nelson with his family in the same ship as Mr McEachern's parents. Mr John Allen , jun. and his brothers, who had done well at Wetherstones, advised Mr McEachern to go no further, and he returned to Dunedin where he worked until December, when, with two other young fellows (all under 20) they set out for Gabriel's Gully. They could only make tucker in their claim, so they proceeded to Wetherstones and took up a claim on Post Office Hill. He worked on other parts of the field, and had a sluicing claim at the back of Solomon's store, Little Bourke street, and an interest in a tail race that was tunnelled under Russell's billiard saloon. On receiving news of Hartley and Reilly's discovery, he sold out. He followed most of the other rushes in Otago with varying success. His last try was at Hamilton's. He left there in 1864 for the Picton rush, voyaging in the ill-fated steamer City of Dunedin, which was lost with every soul on board a few trips later. He was not successful, and returned to Dunedin, where he started work as a photographer.
