Charles Prideaux to take wrecks in the manor of Padstow. The proximity of Crugmere to the west coast and Stepper Point made this an added source of income.5

Some time before 1816 Nicholas had become an Innkeeper. It is not clear if this enterprize was in the town of Padstow or at Crugmere. However it is noteworthy that his grandson John Withell set up business as a spirit merchant in Padstow at about the time of Nicholas's death in 1834.6 The lease forJeffery's tenement in Crugmere was renewed on 17 July 1816 for 7 years at a rental of 70 pounds to Nicholas Key of Padstow Innkepper. Further leases for this property have not been found but it appears that the family continued to live there at least until February 1837 when an estimate was prepared of the annual value of the property at Crugmere occupied by Mrs. Key.5,7

Sarah Withell Sarah Withell, the youngest daughter of Thomas Withell and Ann Kay was to marry her cousin Robert Boyd Key, son of John Key and Mary Boyd and nephew of Jenney Withell. The story of the tragic death of Sarah Key in Bodmin was found in letters sent to her cousin Betsey Blake Morrison m.n Withell, in Newfoundland. She is referred to as Aunt Key in a letter from Avon Cottage 3 May 1856. Apparently Robert had returned from abroad to Cork and had sent for her to come to him immediately.

"She set off with her two children to join the steamer at Plymouth, had engaged a double gig from Padstow to take her on to Plymouth on Good Friday last. When stopping at Bodmin to take some refreshment, Wm Reynolds, the driver of the gig, lifted out one of the children and Mrs. Key, who was in the act of getting out, had turned round to take a basket; the man having neglected to secure the reins, the horse being a very high spirited one, started throwing out Mary by now with the other child, and proceeding down the street, throwing poor Mrs. Key up in the air, and of course dashing her out; she was taken up in a most mangled state, and although life was not extinct for a week yet she never had the least consciousness after the accident". Sarah was born before 7 September 1825 at Padstow, Cornwall, England. Sarah apparently followed John and Mary to Ireland. She had lost a baby sister and her mother had died when she was eight. Her father Thomas remarried when she was 13. Both Sarh and Thomas jn were still living at home in the 1841 census but perhaps they both left at the same time as Mary. A question to answer is where Sarah had the accident and died. Recheck Key deaths in 1856 in England, before ordering work done in Ireland. She married Robert Boyd Key in 1847 at Ireland. Sarah's father Thomas died in Padstow on 15 September 1846 and Mary Withell, wife of her half brother John had died in Ireland on 5 June 1846. Her brother Thomas Withell was in the merchant navy and apart from her stepmother Mary Peter Withell there may have been no other close relative left in Padstow. She was not a blood relative of the Peter connection. It may be that she decided to join John in Ireland to help with his young family. Found on-line. Irish Family Roots /Local Ireland
http://www.irishfamilyrecords.com/irishrecords/SilverStream/Pages/ircrst.html. SERIOUS ACCIDENT AT BODMIN - On Friday last, the following accident occurred at Bodmin. MRS. KEY, of Padstow, had received a letter from her husband in Cork, who is captain of a ship that was about to sail to Rio de Janeiro, requesting to see her before his departure. In consequence, she took her departure from Padstow for Plymouth, and arrived in Bodmin about seven in the evening, in a four-wheeled dog-car, conveying herself, her two children, her cousin, and the driver. They stopped at the Red Lion Inn, about half way down the Fore Street, Bodmin, where the driver left the horse?s head, and was taking out one of the children, when the horse shook himself, and got the bridle out of his mouth. Before the driver could get to his head, the horse went off at full speed, striking the vehicle against the corner of a house about five or six yards below the Red Lion, by which Mrs. Key's cousin, and the child remaining in the dog-cart were thrown out, but fortunately were not injured!
The horse went off at full speed with the vehicle, which next came in contact with an iron lamp opposite the Market House, and knocked the lamp to atoms; after which the animal rushed on at a still more furious speed till he got to the corner of Mr. LEVER's saddler's shop, where Mrs. Key, who was sitting in front, was thrown out with great violence, and her head, it is supposed from the injuries she sustained, must have come against the kerb-stone.

The Mayor of Bodmin, Mr. HAMLEY, from outside his residence, witnessed the flight of the horse, ran down the street, and with the assistance of others took up Mrs. Key, who was insensible, being dreadfully cut about her head, and blood issuing from her ear.

Almost immediately afterwards, Mr. COUCH (assistant to Mr. WARD, surgeon) came to the spot, and Mrs. Key was then conveyed back to the Red Lion, where she was immediately attended by Mr. Couch and Mr. MUDGE and those gentlemen, with Mr. Ward, surgeon, have been in attendance on the sufferer ever since the accident. She has sustained a severe concussion of the brain, but no fracture of the skull; she is, however, in a very precarious state, and slight hopes are entertained of her recovery.

The Mayor, Mr. Hamley, had the children taken to his house, where they remained till the following Saturday, when they were conveyed to Padstow.

It appears that the "boots" at Oliver's Royal Hotel had a very narrow escape when the horse was rushing down the street with the dog-cart. He was lighting the lamp outside the hotel, when, seeing the horse approaching, he had just time to slide down the ladder, when the wheels of the dog-cart came in contact with it, and broke the ladder into three pieces, one of which was carried down by the vehicle thirty or forty yards below the hotel. The accident has occasioned a considerable sensation in Bodmin, and much concern is expressed for the sufferer, Mrs. Key.1 Sarah died from injuries sustained in an accident at Bodmin .She is referred to as Aunt Key in a letter from Avon Cottage 3 May 1856. Apparently her husband had returned from abroad to Cork and had sent for her to come to him immediately. Key, who was in the act of getting out, had turned round to take a basket; the man having neglected to secure the reins, the horse being a very high spirited one, started throwing out Mary by now with the other child, and proceeding down the street, throwing poor Mrs' Key up in the air, and of course dashing her out; she was taken up in a most mangled state, and although life was not extinct for a week yet she never had the least consciousness after the accident".2,3 She age 30 was buried on 2 April 1856 at the churchyard of St Petroc, Padstow, Cornwall, England. The two children were aged 4 and 2 and their mother's death would have been very frightening. Also it would have taken some thime for their father to get home and three grandparents had previously died. It appears that their remaining grandmother Mary Key mn Boyd who was herself aged 77 undertook their care because on 7 April 1861, they were living with her. By 1871 Robert Boyd Key appears to have returned to Padstow and both Sarah and Robert Boyd jun. were living with him.4,3

Robert Boyd Key b. s 1820, d. 2 Apr 1888
Marriage*She married Robert Boyd Key in 1847 at Ireland.
