     The earliest ocurrence of this surname in Cornwall found to date is in the Lay Subsidies imposed 29 Hen. VI (1450). John Legh paid three pounds amd Wm. Ligh paid two pounds. A home parish was not recorded.
During the 1500s and 1600s, the Heralds visited each county and recorded the pedigrees of families. In many cases the pedigrees date back to Norman times (the 11th century). During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Harleian Society published a large series of books containing transcripts of these ancient documents. Information given by William Aleigh to the Heralds on the occasion of the visitation of Cornwall in 1620 indicates that his great-grandfather Tho. Aleigh al's Leigh was descended from the family of Leigh of Highleigh in Cheshire who lived in the time of Henry VI. The editor J L Vivan states that the arms are identical, but that he had been unable to trace the connection.
In Week St Mary registers the name is spelt variously Aleigh, Alleigh, Alee and Leigh, but from 1700 it was Leigh.¹
