He began military service on 27 June 1915 at Maldon, Victoria, Australia, He enlisted in the Australian Infantry Forces and rose to the rank of sergeant in the 1st Battalion. He was sent to France, and was involved in repelling the German offensive known as the Battle of the Lys. He died of wound aged 23. The family member who did the research mentions that Material relating to Murray (as he was known) in the Australian Manuscripts Collection at the State Library of Victoria includes among other things "six letters from a cousin of the Knight children - Will Howells also at the war, and one letter from a C., Hewitt to Mrs Knight (presumably Margaret Ellen). I wonder if those names mean anything to you? The C Hewitt could be any friend of the family, but the cousin interests me as perhaps his name may be amongst your folk. The name is not familiar to me at all. The information further states that there are five Howells listed with William as a Christian name. All returned from the war so more information is needed to narrow down the search. The information also speaks of the Harris boys confirming what is on the family tree. Quoting from the letter I received "Will Howells was not the only cousin of Murray Knight to serve. He was buried on 18 June 1918 at Military Cemetery, Ebblinhem, Nord Department, France. He died on 18 June 1918 at France.

     Arthur Benjamin (Ben) Knight was born in 1892.

Ben wrote to W.O. Harris in 1968 identifying their relationship. He recounted the story of his grandmother's arrival in Australia and how the Welsh folk on board cared for them and took them to Maldon, setting them up in a Tent Town on Lindcott Hill. Following her marriage to Thomas Thomas they had selected land where the two Harris children were brought up. In 1973 he wrote to the Editor of a newspaper regarding articles on the operations of the old Union Cutting and mine. As a child he had lived quite close to this mine and had caught yabbies in the dam. At that time the lease was called Linscott. He recounted that his grandmother had married David Thomas and they had selected land out past Bens Reef. The kilns at Union were used to roast a certain mineral from the stone brought there by prospectors of small operations. There was no government battery and the crushing was done by the owner, Mr. White.¹

     Adjutant Oliver John Edward Harris was born in 1885 at Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia.² Oliver enlisted on 19 July 1915. He too rose to the rank of Lieutenant, and served as Adjutant of 7th Battalion. He won the Military Cross in the area around Passchendaele in October 1917 for reorganizing the battalion in the midst of a barrage so that it might successfully advance at the appointed time. He returned to Australia in 1919, but died on 4 July 1920 (see Official History, Volume V1, Chapter XV, footnote 51)>"

     Vic Harris enlisted on 16 June 1915. He reached the rank of Lieutenant, and died of wounds near Harbonnieres/Vauvillers, south of the Somme, on 9 August 1918. The circumstances of his death are described in Volume V1 of the Official History at Chapter XV, page 633. He is buried in Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, Plot 1V, SectionJ, Grave 16. Lieutenant Thomas Victor Harris was born in 1893. He died on 2 August 1918; Killed in action, WW1.¹

     Thomas Franklin Wain was born on 15 February 1900 at Coomora, Daylesford, Victoria, Australia, The child was the first born to Ellen. "There was not a medical man in attendance because the continued illness of the husband did not permit the getting of a doctor." The birth was premature and the baby was very small. The midwife testified that it was not strong enough to suck when put to the breast for two days. Ellen had difficulty in sleeping following her confinement but about midnight on the 17th she was able to give the baby the breast, following which she fell asleep.^1,2 He died on 18 February 1900 at Coomora, Daylesford, Victoria, Australia, At about 4am Ellen woke up to find that the baby was lying on one arm and appeared to be dead. She called her sister-in-law Carlina Zeigler who had been sleeping with her to get up and they both confirmed that the baby had died.^3,4
