He was baptized on 24 June 1755 at St John the Baptist, Heather, Leicestershire, England.1
Jacob Sperry Innkeeper of Hinckley lived before 1782 at Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire, England, Jacob's sisters Mary Bent and Alice Wood were living in Stoney Stanton and sometime before 1782, Jacob also moved to Stoney. It was there that he met Jane Dimmock.2 He married Jane Dimmock on 15 October 1782 at Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire, England. Jane was a daughter of William and Prudence Dimmock. By the terms of her father's will, Jane would have expected to share in the inheritance of property from her father on the remarriage or death of her mother. It is probable that because of her own early death, Jacob or her son would not have benefited.2 Jacob was a defendant in a court case on 24 April 1794. Initially the child was chargeable to the parish but Jacob and Elizabeth were summoned to appear before the Overseers of the Poor for Sharnford. Jacob was apparently unable to shew cause why he should not be the reputed father of the said male child born to Elizabeth Lines. The two Justices of the Peace, John Foster and Thomas Greaves adjudged him as the father and accordingly a maintenance order was issued ordering to Jacob to pay ten shillings for the lying in of the said Elizabeth Lines and the maintenance to the date of the order. Jacob was ordered to pay one shilling and sixpence weekly for the continuing maintenance of the child and Elizabeth was to pay sixpence weekly..3

He married Prudence Sneap on 20 November 1798 at St Helen, Sharnford, Leicestershire, England. Jacob and Prudence had only one known child, a daughter Eliza. However a baptism for Eliza has not been found. Evidence for children of Jacob Sperry is in his will dated 5 October 1832 which refers to his wife Prudence, sons William and Thomas and daughter Eliza (a minor).4

In 1805 Jacob successfully applied for a license to operate an Alehouse named the Rose and Crown in Hinckley in his own right. Jacob may have previously held a license at Market Bosworth in 1798 and other members of the extended family were also involved in the industry. A cousin also named Jacob Sperry was the innkeeper at Bagworth form 1797 until his death in 1821. A Henry Taft (possible uncle) was the licensee at Heather from 1756 until 1791 and William Dimmock held the license at Stoney Stanton from 1799 until 1827. The Alehouse business was successful and Jacob expandced it as a base for a carrier operating locally and three times weekly between Hinckley and Leicester.5 Jacob Sperry Innkeeper of Hinckley was license of the Rose and Crown in 1825 at Hinckley, Leicestershire, England.5 Jacob was listed in a Licensee directory at Hinckley, Leicestershire, England, in 1830.6

He made a will on 5 October 1832 at Hinckley, Leicestershire, England, First Jacob bequeathed all his personal estate consisting of Live and Dead Stock, all Horse Wagons Carts Implements used in his business as a carrier and all Household Foods and furniture, Book debts and whatsoever other personal property to the use of his wife Prudence Sperry for her support and benefit. However he made provision that should his daughter Eliza marry, or after she became of age, wish to set up a house, she was to have at least Thirty Pounds made over to her. At the decease of his wife Prudence the remainder of personal estate was also to go to Eliza or her children. If Eliza was to die without issue before attaining age of twenty-one, all personal property was to remain with Prudence and at her death it would be divided between his two sons, William and Thomas Sperry..7 Jacob died at age 77 on 23 February 1833 at Hinckley, Leicestershire, England.8 He was buried on 28 February 1833 at Hinckley, Leicestershire, England. The burial service was taken by Father S R Proctor, priest of the new Roman Catholic church at Hinckley..8

Eliza was 15 when Jacob died. She married John Hall on and Prudence shifted in with the Halls. John Hall is listed as a farmer in 1841.
Who took over the carrier business on behalf of Prudence - It appears to have been son Thomas but he died in 1838 soon after his father. His wife Mary Ann (Warrington) remarried and her 2nd husband is listed as a carrier in 1841 living in Castle Street Hinckly.
