Marriage* | She married Arthur Henry Whittaker at Auburn, Victoria, Australia, on 22 August 1891. Arthur had given the information that he had been a widower since 1889 and had 4 children all dead. It is likely that the mother of three of these children was Annie Ross but there may have been an earlier child to Elizabeth Bloomer. Arthur stated his age as 38 and Bessie was only 21. We now know that he was actually 47, some 26 years older than Bessie. Bessie obviously never knew his real age because when he died on 15 February 1907, she gave his age as 52 years and 11 months. He had apparently continued to celebrate his birthday in the correct month of March but dropped 9 years..1 |

He had apparently continued to celebrate his birthday in the correct month of March but dropped 9 years..1 As of 22 August 1891,her married name was Whittaker.1 She was listed as a resident in the census report at Richmond, Victoria, Australia, in 1903.2
When Arthur Henry died on on 15 February 1907Elizabeth became a widow. She would have been devastated, not only at the loss of her husband of some 15 years but also because she had only the proceeds of his insurance to support herself and five young children. Her parents were old and the outlook for her was bleak. Her eldest son, Arthur would have been about 15 years old and although he was most likely already working, his contribution would not have supported the whole family. Elizabeth needed to find a husband willing to support her and the younger children; Influenza Pheumonia and Heart Failure.3
Elizabeth soon found a new partner and six weeks after the death of Arthur Henry, she married Samuel Harwood at Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, on 27 March 1907. Samuel was a widower of 49 with no dependant children who worked as a miner in Korumburra in Gippsland..4 As of 27 March 1907,her married name was Harwood.4 Elizabeth moved with an unknown person on 28 March 1907 at Korumburra, Victoria, Australia. The family also spent some time in Jumbunna another small mining community not far from Korumburra. Samuel must have undertaken to help with the care of the younger children and Bessie would have had a reasonable life.
Elizabeth became a widow for the second time when Samuel died from pneumonia at the Korumbunna railwat station on 13 November 1908 They had been married only 20 months; He had suffered from double pneumonia and bronchitis for three days.5 Just one week after the death of Samuel Harwood, Bessie's father William McDonell also died.
Elizabeth Bain McDonellcontinued to live after 13 November 1908 at Korumburra, Victoria, Australia, The insurance money due from the death of Arthur Henry Whitaker was probably all gone and she had no male to support her and the 4 children. She made a trip to Melbourne early in 1909 with the 4 children in the hope of getting help from her family. Her brother Angus McDonell of Beaver's road Northcote later gave evidence that on that occasion he had adopted the older boy George but Bessie had taken the two girls and James with her back to Jumbunna.
As another winter approached life continued to be extremely difficult. She had been living with a miner named John Bruce when she became ill, and on 26 September 1909 she "took to her bed" where she was attended by the doctor from Oultrim. He subsequently found that she had suffered a miscarriage. A neighbour visited her, taking some food and doing some house cleaning. When her condition became septic and worsened, the doctor and the police made arrangements for her to be admiited to the Women's Hospital in Melbourne. John Bruce took her and the children to Melbourne on the train. On 5 October 1909Elizabeth Bain McDonell was admitted to the Women's Hospital at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Elizabeth died of blood poisoning on 19 October 1909 at Women's Hospital Melbourne, Carlton, Victoria, Australia, at age 39. The children had become orphans and the younger ones were placed with various McDonell uncles, brothers of their mother. There is no indication of help from a Whitaker and it now appears that Arthur Henry was the only member of his family to come to Australia..6 She was buried on 22 October 1909 at Booroondarra, Kew, Victoria, Australia, The funeral arrangements were made by Mr W McDonnell of 118 Malvern Rd., Malvern. There was a Glass hearse and one coach and the coffin was black. Total cost including cemetery and minister's fee was 5 pounds 18 shilings.7 She was buried in the Boorondara cemetery on 22 October 1909 at Kew, Victoria, Australia. Also buried in this grave:Margarite Rose McDonell b. 1907, d.1909 and Harold Davidson d.7 December 1921,age 1 month.8 She was coroner's report on 24 November 1909 at Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.9
