Prior to the beginning of Civil Registration in England in September 1837, church records of baptism, marriages and burials, and documents such as wills and land contracts were the primary means of recording family relationships. From 1851 it was required to give a birthplace when the census was taken and this can be correlated with information for baptism from the parish register. If a family did not have a child baptized or the church record has been lost, such identification is problematic.

Thomas Wain was probably born about 1811 either in Bilstone or Ratcliffe (Culey). However a baptism has not been found consistent with the information from Census returns. In the 1851 Census his age was given as 39 and his birthplace as Ratcliffe LEI and in the 1861 census he was 49 but his birthplace was noted as Bilston LEI.1,2

Ratcliffe Culey and Bilston were very small villages in the south west of Leicestershire and about 5 miles apart. Bilston was 3m NW of Market Bosworth and had an of area 713 acres. Wains had lived in both villages. Ratclffe Parish registers survive from 1562 but there are gaps particularly between 1806 and 1813. The population of Bilston in 1831 was only 79 persons and it did not have its own parish church. Accordingly the celebration of births, marriages and deaths took place in nearby parish churches such as Norton juxta Twycross, Twycross, Congerstone and Market Bosworth. When this occurred the vicar usually noted which parish the family came from. However not all children were baptized.

Thomas certainly had an association with Bilston because although his firstborn daughter Maria was baptised at Barwell, she also gave her birthplace as Bilston on two census returns.

He married Frances Dale on 10 February 1833 in the medieaval parish church of St Mary at Barwell, Leicestershire, England, At the time of their marriage both bride and groom belonged to the parish. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev. George Mettram and the witnesses were Sarah Dale and John Wain who may have been siblings of Thomas and Frances. None of the wedding party were able to sign their names.3 When Thomas registered the birth of his fourth child Thomas on 23 May 1840, he was employed as a Labourer in husbandry at Barwell, Leicestershire, England.4 A census listed Thomas as head of household on 30 March 1851 in at Church Street, Burbage, Leicestershire, England. and working as a gardener. His age was 39 and his birthplace was given as Ratcliffe LEI.1

Thomas died on 21 September 1868 at Hinckley, Leicestershire, England. Thomas was a market gardener and had been living in Barwell Lane Hinckley. Cause of death was Typhus fever and Ulceration of the Bowels. His age was given as 56 years.5

Thomas Wain was buried on 24 September 1868 at Parish church of St Mary, Hinckley, Leicestershire, England.

Frances was not born into a family owning large tracts of land. Her father was paying rates in Barwell from ??? but it is not known if he was actually a small landowner. However one of her g grandmothers was a Turville and one wonders if the family were aware of this connection. The Turville family had been prominent in that area of Leicester from about 1200, the effigies on the tomb in the parish church of Thurlaston dating from Richard Turvile of Normanton died 1414.      Thomas was born on 23 May 1840 at Barwell, Leicestershire, England. Thomas was probably named after both his father and his maternal grandfather..1

He married Sarah Ann Sperryon 28 March 1864 in the Holy Cross Chapel in Leicester according to the rites of the Roman Catholic Church by William Nickolds, Clerk. The witnesses were William Hardy and Sarah's sister Anne Jane Sperry. Although Thomas was 23, Sarah was only 18 and would have had to have her father's permission to marry. Because of the difference in religion it would also have been difficult for them to be married in Hinckly and they had both been living in Leicester -Thomas in Hollick yard, Silver St. and Sarah in Devonshire St. See Notes re Holy Cross Chapel.2 Thomas Wain jrhad organised migration before 15 September 1867 His wife's stepbrother William Lee had already gone to Australia and had settled in Daylesford.
They emigrated from at Plymouth, Devon, England, with his parents on 24 September 1867. Thomas and Sarah were given an assisted passage on the Canterbury under a Government scheme as a married couple with two children. Because the Canterbury embarked from Plymouth the family would have had a long and tiring train journey to arrive there from Hinckley. The owners of the Canterbury were James B Wilcocks, Plymouth and the master was G.R.Fenlie. It was 1296 tons and licensed to carry 409 passengers.3 After a voyage of 140 days the Canterbury arrived in Melbourne in December 1867. However Thomas gave information on Sarah's death certificate that the family had spent one month in Sydney. The family would then have travelled to Daylesford to meet her William Lee, Sarah's stepbrother.3 Sometime after 24 Sept 1868, Thomas would have received information that his father had died suddenly of Typhus Fever. He was was levied rates In 1870 Thomas and Sarah were living in a house in Bridport St owned by Peter Millar. He was also paying rates on a market reserve owned by the Borogh Council. in 1870.

He resided 100 acres rated at 30 pounds NAV, at Coomoora, Victoria, Australia, in 1882.

He married Ruth Holdenat the Castlemaine Presbyterian Church on 5 December 1884. Thomas Wain was a widower, son of Thomas Wain and Frances Dale The witnesses were John Holden and Ann Holden. The entry also gave Thomas's birthplace as Barwell near Hinckley and his age as 46.4,5 Thomas didn't remain in Bendigo. He died at his son's home in Richmond so it is presumed he went there to live after Ruth died. He made a will on 15 April 1909 at Bendigo, Victoria, Australia.6 Thomas Wain jr moved before 1919 to Collingwood where he lived with his third son Thomas George. This was probably following Ruth's death.

Thomas died at 87 Cromwell St. at Collingwood, Victoria, Australia, on 11 July 1919. He was 79 years of age and the cause of death was senile debility and heart failure .7 He was buried on 14 July 1919 at Coburg, Victoria, Australia.8,9

The following obituary was placed in the Daylesford Advocate on 18 July 1819:- We regret to announce the death of a former Daylesford resident in the person of Mr. Thomas Wain. The late Mr. Wain was a native of Leicestershire England, arriving in Victoria 51 years ago. He settled down at farming at Coomoora , and on retiring took up his abode at his son's residence at Collingwood, Melbourne, where he passed away at the advanced age of 81 years. He leaves four sons to mourn their loss, one of whom is Mr. Wain , of East St. The funeral took place on Monday, his remains being interred in the Coburg cemetery.10
