David Harries1
M, b. 1793, d. before 28 March 1864
The story of Thomas Harris and his family is a vital link in the story of the migration of these families to Australia.
The children of Thomas in Australia knew very little about their father's family, and in 1908 his daughter Margaret Ellen Knight (Harris) decided to try and make contact with their relatives in Wales. Just before her mother died Margaret Ellen wrote to Llanchiach Farm, giving her father's name as Thomas Harris of Shingru (Shingree?) in Llanfabon. She was particularly searching for information about his father, David Harris also of Shingree. David would have been nher grandfather. The family has no record of a response.2
It has now been established that the family of Thomas Harris did live in Llanfabon and that when Thomas moved to Australia, his father David Harries was actually living in the hamlet of Shinrig. However David was unable to sign his name and the spelling of the surname varied in different documents, evolving from the patronymic Harry to Harries and eventually to Harris. The surname was spelled as HARRY in both the parish register in 1821 and the 1841 census record, but in 1851 it was written as Harries. There were other Harries families living in Llanfabon which may have been related. In 1851 a Thomas Harries 72 was a farmer of 100 acres living at Twyn's Harries, and there were a number of earlier families noted in the Parish register of St Mabyn, including a baptism of a William Harries to David Harries and Mary in 1833.
Llanfabon is a parish in Glamorgan, South Wales about 9 miles from Merthyr-Tydvil. It is a generally mountainous area between the rivers Taf and Romney. The road from Merthyr to Cardiff passed through the parish and the intersection between the Glamorgan and the Aberdare canals was also in the parish. A search of a map of Glamorgan drawn in 1850 has located hamlets named Efail Shingrug and Shingrug about a ¼ mile from Llanciach, in the parish of Llanfabon. The ordnance survey map of 1890 is much more detailed, and confirms the location of properties named Efail Shingrug and Singrug ¼ mile from Llanciach. In later maps the spelling was Singrug and although the spellings varied, these would have been the places about which Elizabeth had told her daughter and is probably the area where Thomas Harris was born.
David Harries was born about in 1793 at Llanfabon, Wales.1
David Harries married Jane Davies on 3 May 1827 at Llanfabon, Wales, in the parish church of St Mabyn in Llanfabon.3
Sometime before 1861 the family moved from Garth and when the census was taken on 7 April of that year, David Harries was living at Shinrig. He was an agricultural labourer and aged 62
