Gen 4 William Peter of Bakebeare DOR and Milton HAM

FatherGen 3 William Peter of Tor Newton b. 1448
Williamwas the second son. A settlement prior to marriage was arranged between Gen 4 William Peter of Bakebeare DOR and Milton HAM and Jane Arundell daughter of Sir Roger Arundell Jane's parents lived in Devon but also had estates in Cornwall. It was from Jane Arundell that the Cornwall estates were acquired. This is reported to have included Trenearn, Treator, Tregarryn, Treniow and Trelowsa. The Barton of Trenearne with Treator, Tregerryn, Treniow and Trelowsa were acquired
by the Peter family through the marriage of William Peter with Jane, daughter of Sir
Roger Arundell in the C16. In 1579 Thomas Peter was given these estates and he first
settled at Trenearne (qv) then moving to Treator making it the residence of the
descendents of the Peter family for about 200 years.1,2 He married Jane Arundell daughter of Sir Roger Arundell of Calwoody in Devon. Both families were staunch Roman Catholcs. William had succeded in his own right to lands in Bakebeare DOR and in Milton HAM and by this marriage he further increased his patrimony to include Trenearn, Treator, Tregerryn, Treniow, and Trelowsa in Cornwall. William and Jane did not reside in the Cornwall properties but made their principal residences at Bakebeare in Dorset and Milton in Hampshire. Of the three sons born to William and Jane, only John the youngest was to leave issue.3,4 The second son William appears to have inhertited his father's estates before 1544.

Nicholas was one of the burgesses elected to serve in parliament for the borough of Shaftesbury. in the twenty-eighth of Henry VI (1449).1,2 Nicholas inherited his mother's estates in Dorsetshire and lived at Bakebeare. It seems likely that Nicholas died before 1472 at Bakebeare, Dorset, England. An inquisition held in that year found that his nephew William was the grandson and heir to the first-named John Peter. Nicholas died without issue.3

He was a student at at Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, and in 1523 he was elected a fellow of All SOuls, and soon afterwards, principal of Peckwaters Inn, (now part of Christ Church) also at Oxford University.1 He received a degree of Doctor of Laws at Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1532.1 Sir William Petre or Peter was the ancestor of the noble family of Petre, of Writtle in the county of Essex.
The Western estates of the Petre family of Ingatestone Hall, Essex, cover Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Gloucestershire. The founder of the estate was Sir William Petre, c.1505-1572, who was born at Torbryan in South Devon. He became tutor to the brother of Anne Boleyn, later entered the service of Henry VIII, acted as a commissioner for the dissolution of the monasteries and was a principal secretary of state to Henry, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth. He began to purchase properties in Devon in the 1540s and by his death the substantial part of the Western estate had been established and was to remain, with the important additions of Axminster (including the site of Newenham Abbey)and part of Colyton by his son Sir John, created Baron Petre of Writtle in 1603, intact without any important additions until its dispersal out of the family starting in the 1780s and completed in 1826. The family seat was and still is at Ingatestone and the head of the family never lived in the West.2 He resided, at Writtle, Essex, England. In 1543 (the thirty fifth of Henry VIII) William was sworn into the Privy Council, knighted and made one of the principal secretaries of State. William was appointed by Henry VIII on his deathbed, as a councillor and advisor to his son Edward VI in 1546. William died on 13 January 1572. He was buried after 13 January 1572The effigies of both himself and his wife Anne are in the church. at Ingatestone, Essex, England.
